im a full time carer for my wife who has various illnesses. about four years ago i went through a time of being unwell i had a diabetes test and i was ok. But i have been feeling unwell for a long while now and evrytime i went back and forth to my gp they would give me treatment for that particular problem, i had really bad migraines and was told it was a food intolerance, i kept getting boils(just 2 of them and they always came up in the same place) and i was told it was probably stress related and i should just keep them clean and covered - but even now they still come back, i had terrible burning and severe pains on the sole of my foot- the doctor gave me ibuprofen and recently my eye sight has become blurred - my gp told me to see my optician. someone suggested i might have diabetes and should ask for a test, i did and have a blood test on the 28th of the month but the absolute kicker came when my wife who has to have regular blood work done because of things such as her epilepsy had a call to come in for another blood test, she had it done and then when we saw the gp he told us she has type 2, we weren't expexting that at all, we struggle to cope with all her illness' now but she is very down about having diabetes on top of everything and my test is yet to come and then i might have it too.

I have been trying to read up on the subject as much as i can but a lot of the advice seems to contradict itself, such as being told to make sure to eat carbs with every meal but people on here have said that a low carb diet works very well.

i am quite frightened about everything if im honest.

It's inevitable tha it's all rather scary. We are both diabetics, husband alifelong type1 and I 5 years of type2.
It's become a part of life and not much more than a nuisance. I in particular, keep my blood sugar at non-diabetic levels and am very fit and well, except for about 1 cold per year. I have it at the moment
Husband has many issues and comlications. I won't let thim give in to them and at the same time do my best to support him and keep him well.
At least the meals I provide are right for both of us. (I'm a believer in low carb)
Diabetes can rule your life and you can give in to all the scare stories.
Blindness and amputations DO happen to some people, but are FAR less likely if you control the Blood Glucose tightly.
It's a condition, where much of the care is in the patient's own hands. Learn what works for you and keep tight control and you'll probably be fine. I prefer to think of diabetes as a condition rather than an illness. It's never going away, but you can feel well.

owen, most people feel frightened when they're diagnosed as having diabetes, and that's perfectly understandable. The thing to bear in mind is that diabetes isn't an automatic death sentence, and the illness can be and is very successfully managed by most people. For my part, I've found it more of a nuisance having to turn up for medical checks than actually controlling blood sugar levels.

If I were you, I wouldn't pay too much attention to the debates about diet here until you've been through the medical mill and discovered exactly what the problems are. Even the most high-powered low carb enthusiasts here don't claim that their diet is suitable for everyone. The advice is sincere (mostly) but may well not be of any value to you.

All the best to yourself and your wife.

Hello Owen and welcome to the forum. It's true what Hanna says Diabetes is an absolute nuisance but I admit to feeling better now (3 months after diagnosis) than I have felt in a long time. It takes a bit of adjusting to but needn't stop you from doing what you want to do. I am type 1. Everyone feels very scared at first, but with a few adjustments it really does become part of your routine.

You will get plenty of help and advice on here. Everyone is very kind and caring. Have a good look through the postings and if you have questions, just ask. Someone will always lend a helping hand on here.

Best Wishes
Caitycakes x
