So your endo is saying that you have insulin resistance like a T2 as well as no insulin of your own (T1)?

Are you having trouble controlling your levels?

I have a bit of insulin reistance (thanks T2 dad) and find that life is easier on a lowish carb diet?

As regards the metformin, if it has unpleasant gastric side effects you can try the slow release version.

Good luck.

It is common practice to prescribe Metformin for Type 1 diabetics. It is not for sugar control but as a cardiovascular protector. It also helps reduce Insulin resistance which can be present in T1D but it is not so common.for T1 to have resistance. It is belt and braces.

I'm guessing that you have developed insulin resistance, so your body is no longer responding to insulin as well as it should, just like someone with T2.
I would think that the answer is much the same as for a T2. The more carbs you have, the more insulin you need, more insulin means worsening insulin resistance.
So less carbs should result in lower insulin requirements, less insulin circulating hopefully improved insulin resistance.

Thank you guys for the replys.
I have been a Type 1 for 21 years now . i only just been given libre
2 now. If you manage your blood glucose well and your hba1c are not to bad then funding is difficult in some areas in the uk. i found this tec usefull in seeing patterns. i have had to increase my basal insulin to keep control and also bolus carb counting is out the window.
yes just stress. i will say metformin is helping early days but windy and is hard on the stomach

I also have aspects of both and have had a positive antibodies test (for type 1) years ago when mine first developed but I've always been quite highly resistant too.
Mine was late onset and triggered after an operation and ever since then I've had consultants and SDNs disagreeing on how to treat me. Some will say you can't have both, others will say of course you can it's just very rare and occasionaly they'll stand in the same room and start arguing with each other loudly (I had this happen once!).

I moved to a different area a couple of years ago and we started the whole cycle over again and it's taken 2 years to be re-assesed until they could decide the best treatment plan for me. I'm now mostly being treated as type 2 as I never stopped producing some of my own insulin and actually, the amount I am producing seems to have increased to quite healthy levels showing (I presume) some recovery of the Beta cells. It's quite variable though (it's unclear if that's production related or resistance) making it difficult to predict so I'm still an ongoing test case.

So yeah as far as I have read and discussed, double diabetes does exist, it's just rare.

I am type one on the t slim pump and Dexcom and I have been on metformin for decades for my insulin resistance. Drs have questioned my type of diabetes then come back to type one with type 2 difficulties. Last year I got put on ozempic for me to help my insulin work better for me. I didn't know it as a weight loss drug at first. My diabetes has been very difficult to control over the years but now it's much improved with the combination I've just mentioned. I'm fine on metformin but I do have some side effects with ozempic but the positives far out way the negatives for me

I was dx'd as T2 in 2017, then a very serious DKA episode in 2019 which tested as T1. I'm now 75 and I'm low carb and it's still difficult to get the dose correct. I have been wondering about an insulin pump. I do have the Libre Freestyle 2 and it's great for keeping track because my BD does fall rapidly. I also had the stomach stapling nearly 43 years ago and that might be hampering it because of the lack of absorption of nutrients and food. I'm going to ask my Diabetic Educator about it tomorrow and see what she thinks. It might help if I have little amounts of insulin like having a working pancreas. I need something that will work better. It's so frustrating and scary. Take care.
