Intensive treatment of screen-detected diabetes patients does not achieve statistically significant reductions in mortality and cardiovascular events, UK research has shown.

‘When compared with routine care, an intervention to promote target-driven, intensive management of patients with type 2 diabetes detected by screening was associated with small improvements in cardiovascular risk factors, but was not associated with significant reductions in the incidence of cardiovascular events or death over five years.

There is something about the term "target-driven" which makes me shudder.

It sounds as though initial treatment is reverting to what it was 4 years ago when I was diagnosed - but minus the test strips, and meters. The one-size fots all mentality is still alive and kicking.

I am not convinced that putting the newly diagnosed on different medications all a once is a good idea.
I always blame metformin for my bad reactions , initially but it could ,just as easily have been the stains. My GP didn't know. or care, although he was supposed to be the diabetes specialist in the practice.

Someone recenly posted about their GP gradually introducing meds because she didn't want to overload the patient's system at first. A much better approach I think,

I just hope there is not going to be the same emphasis on driving down the patient's bg levels as quickly as possible . regardless of consequences, as there was when I was diagnosed. But I fear it may be the case..
