The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned that the type 2 diabetes drugs dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors may cause severe joint pain. DPP-4 inhibitors, which include sitagliptin (Januvia), sitagliptin and metformin (Janumet), saxagliptin, linagliptin, and alogliptin, help the body to produce more insulin when it is needed and prevent the liver from producing glucose when the body does not need it. They are usually combined with a healthy diet and plenty of exercise. The FDA does not recommend that people taking DPP-4 inhibitors stop taking the medication. They should keep taking it, but contact their healthcare team immediately if they experience any joint pain. The FDA identified a number of cases in which severe joint pain was linked with DPP-4 inhibitors. The pain could begin at any time after taking the drugs: sometimes the symptoms appeared after one day of taking DPP-4 inhibitors; other times the symptoms did not appear for years. In most cases, the pain subsided less than a month after the patients stopped taking DPP-4 inhibitors. Often, the pain returned when DPP-4 inhibitor treatment was resumed, whether it was the same DPP-4 inhibitor or a different one.

Acceptance of health treatment claims that are not adequately supported by evidence. I dislike it when people sell ineffective and even harmful alternative health products to exploit the desperation of people with chronic illness.
I'm concerned about these and other side effects and risks from these drugs and I sure hope doctors and nurses are giving people the right info about them.

As the article says, people should not stop taking these drugs and should see their doctor if they have joint pain.

There is further information about the side effects of drugs in this class, and some info about insulin for T2s here:

I do not have diabetes
I've read this report and its a side effect new to the meds.
I've not experienced any side effects yet, and have nothing but praise the way it helps me.
Won't even discuss this with my consultant.

I did have those pains with statins though!
Maybe some of them where on statins!!??

Researchers usually design the study in such a way that those effects are taken into account, so I doubt statins would have confused the results.

Not everyone gets side effects from a drug. For example, I'm on metformin and I have never had stomach or bowel problems from it.

I think people should consider this report if they are thinking about starting these drugs or are having side effects from them. They are not the only drug that can achieve the same benefits.

Unfortunately I would have to go through more tests and trials than I would like to be effective as my gliptin. I may have to in future but I hope not, then again I might get T2.! But I'm going to try my damnest not to!
