Hello
i have been testing my levels for about a wk now (type 2 diet only) i got some test strips and a meter off my DR. He has asked me to test 4 times a day for 2 wks .Then return and see whats what .My meter said that the strips were empty?? I investigated them and found them to still have some anyway long story shortened I called the surgery this morning explaining i need some more and could i collect them at the local chemist .She said i will have to speak to the practice manager??? I'm what? i explained thet i am at an oppointment that afternoon and was required to attend with all my results she said i will call you back (i'm still waiting).
Does anybody else manage to get past the secratery?????????
Do you think it would ever occurr to them that we absolutely want to prick our fingers 4 times a day .7 days a weak.??????
My point is this a 18 yr old secratery asking private question's infront of 20-30 people isn't my idea of cofidentiality .?????? And what medical trianing would that young lady have !!!!!!!!!!!!
Makes you wonder has anyone ever sat in the waiting room when it's quiet the receptionist and the secrateries YapYap Yap about peoples illness (they don't realise that your there if you sit quiet!!) .Just wanted to share and air my opinion cheers Tim

My Doctor's surgery offers a private room if you want more privacy when speaking to the lady behind the glass... I do agree about having to discuss things with a receptionist, about some things it's normal as they need to know certain details but what I was wondering is, why does the receptionist have access to my medical history on the computer???? I was asked to get my blood test results via the phone after 2pm the next day and as I was already close by I went into the doctor's and told the RECEPTIONIST that I am there to get some blood test results and I watched with an open mouth as she klimpered around on the computer and then told me the results... I was too schocked to say anything but the next time I am at the doctor's office I will be voicing my displeasure that my medical history is accsessible to every RECEPTIONIST and that I would like a nurse, at least, to tell me what's what instead!!!!

If you do hear the secretary talking about other peoples illnesses then she can be prosecuted under the Data Protection Act (I know this because I took my Data Protection Act refresher course yesterday :D ).

You need to take the upper hand with her. She's probably trying to appear confident in front of the patients and it's coming across as insensitive. Tell her you are not confortable discussing your personal details in a public space and want a private area. That should be enough to bring her into line. If not then ask to speak to someone else as you don't feel you are being fully understood. Try to keep it non personal and polite but firm at the same time.

I know it can be difficult sometimes to summon the courage when you're not feeling at your best but give it a try and good luck.

thanks for replying
maybe i should tell the her how much income tax and national insurance i have paid to be entitled to my and anyone elses privacy.
Tim :(

I would have been delighted o have been able o get my results from ANYOE this week. I have an appointment with he consultant at the hospital tomorrow, I am also due an annual review at the gp's. At my practice a health Care assistant does the blood test weights and measures etc on one day and you see the doctor another time. To avoid duplication i thought i would see the consultant before the GP so asked to have the HBAiC done last week so that the results would be available for both.
I wanted to lnow the results for myself before going o see the Consultan and was old they would be available on Monday afternoon. When I rang I was eventually told they were not availbale but somehow was not convinced. I called back on Tuesday. A different receptionist who is new tried o help but was a little out of her depth. I was not convinced by what she told me as she had never dealt with the HBA1 C before. When I asked if I might speak to the diabetic nurse I was told that she would call me . When? Thursday between 8.30 and 12 .30!
I had to be content with that bu fate tok a hand. The following morning our telephone line was dead. An underground fault. As the signal for mobiles here is not very reliable i just cancelled the whole thing.

Hope ypu get the strips!

The receptionist ladies are a tough breed at my local surgery...and od speak to everyone like they are deaf.

I found I was pregnant (good news!) and went to see the GP, who confirmed my happy state. As T1 diabetic, I was wary about telling people, and wanted to keep the news quiet for a while...sharing it only with my husband. I was mortified, whne teh receptionist said...at many decibels..." OK, I will book you in with midwife in about 6 weeks then". Not a lot else she could have done I know...but one of my colleaugues, whi was in teh waiting room did know I was pregnant about 2 months before we told our arent our happy news. Luckily, I hadn't seenn her, and she was very discreet, but it could have been really upsetting.

hi sugar2
I have been advised to write to the practice manager about it .I don't suppose they can put a stop to it if they don't know .I think what happend to was disgracefull you definately complain.
