My husband is Type 2 and has dried fruit on porridge, mixed fruit with cranberries and apricots. Is that very sweet? Only a dessert spoonful. His hba1c keeps rising ( now 59)but he doesnt eat a lot, no chocolate or crisps, Snacks etc. Any advice please?

My husband is Yype 2. He is on 500mg metformin twice a day. He is not overweight, active for a 76 yr old, does not overeat or have a sweet tooth, no junk food. It has gone from 52 to 59 in 15 months. I know we're all different but what can he do?

That’s quite a few carbs, I couldn’t eat porridge or those fruits, dried fruit the sugar is concentrated, apricots are higher in carbs also, porridge is one that a lot of T2 find pushes their blood sugars into double figures.

Is this what he has for breakfast? Maybe try a few fresh or frozen berries with full fat Greek yogurt & a few nuts & seeds sprinkled in. Or if he likes bacon & eggs, omelettes, scrambled eggs & smoked salmon or avocado

Does he test regularly? If nor maybe try a reset with a strict testing regime for a could of weeks tree if the mess he’s having are too high in carb for him

Well the carbs in the porridge would be too much for me. Plus, yes, there is a lot of sugar in dried fruit.

Has he tried a libre?he could wear one for two weeks and see what is spinning his blood sugar.

Hi @DiabeticDi As you can see from the other responses porridge and dried fruits are not too good for a diabetic.

Can I ask why you're husband is eating this for breakfast?
Is it time constraint need something quick in the morning or is this in your mind "the healthy option"

Healthy option.
Porridge is carbs = sugar.
Milk is lactose = sugar.
Dried fruit = concentrated sugar.

Doesn't sound to healthy. God forbid you have a fruit juice with it.

If time is not an issue try an old fashion bacon and eggs.
Bacon & eggs are both proteins, protein generally helps stabilize glucose levels, add something like fresh avocado for natural fats to give you energy in the morning.

I scramble the eggs no milk just butter & use home made guacamole instead of plain avocado.

Hope this helps.

All I know is I can treat as a type 1 with a hypo successfully (low BG.) with dried fruit.
It’s a quick hit when no sweets available?
