Drifted out of "remission" with no obvious reason

Hi all,

4 years ago I switched to a low carb diet (moderate low carb, <75g carbs a day) and my HbA1C went from 48 into the "normal" range, i.e. sub 40 mmol/mol after 3 months. Never really got rid of dawn effect high morning fasting levels. I use a Libre sometimes to check spikes/how things are going. So have been in "remission" for over 3.5 years.

In Feb and April this year my HbA1C was 38 and 36. But in August went up to 43 and has just been measured again at 42.

Not sure what is going on: my diet hasn't changed. Had a few stressful "adventure" over the summer. Weight hasn't changed (I am a thin Type 2, 14% body fat, BMI 21)

Having checked with a Libre over last couple of months my blood sugar response is behaving strangely at times, eg
- never drops low even if not eating anything (staying above 6 or 7 during day & night)
- reacting to low carb meals (some v low carb) by going much higher than used to
- sometimes not reacting to a moderate carb meal.

Has anyone else experienced similar?

Many thanks

Sorry you are drifting higher with your HbA1cs, this could be due to the extra stress you’ve been under as stress is known for raising blood sugars. Might you also be eating more food (comfort eating) so although eating low carb foods you are actually eating more carbs? I know I have done that in the past, it’s all too easy for portion sizes to creep up when your mind is distracted by your worries.

I had similar problems, although with much worse results. I joined this forum early 2021 after being diabetic 10 years. I went low carb and fairly quickly got my HbA1C into pre diabetic levels (although never lower), but early 2923 my levels started to go up. I didn’t change my diet or activity, and nothing I did could bring them back down.

I don’t have any answers for you I’m afraid. If you are certain nothing else has changed then it might just be your body.

This was my dad too, sometimes even with doing everything possible sometimes things can just change. T2 isn’t linear otherwise all of us on keto would be in remission, I’m certainly not & never have been. @BravoKilo, if you’re certain that nothings changed then perhaps it’s time to see your GP for maybe getting some medication to help bring your numbers down. There’s no shame in needing the help of meds if that’s what you need
