Can anyone tell me why I sometimes your Bg will suddenly fall? One tea time (6pm) my BG was 13 (after a cake at lunchtime!) around 10/10.30pm it had dropped to 3.2 any ideas??

Hi Sarah.

No doubt you would have had some evening insulin and this would have brought down your blood glucose if your insulin to carb ratio was to high. Try and refrain from eating cake as a substitute to a normal healthy food, but if you do you will have to cover with extra insulin.

Hope you took some fast-acting glucose when your bg was 3.2! :)

Yes I had my normal insulin. The cake wasn't a substitute just something I had with my lunch. I wouldn't have a clue how to adjust insulin doses to what I'm eating! No idea how to count carbs or calories, never been asked to do this. Apart from a potato I've no idea what else is a carb. I think I had a mars bar to bring my bg back up!

Sarah, at the first oppertunity ask your diabetes nurse to put your name forward to enroll on the DAFNE course (dose adjustment for normal eating) should they be available in your PCT. The course teaches type 1's the principle of carb counting and matching their insulin correctly to the carbs they eat in their food (this is called insulin/carb ratio's). This gives you the flexibility to eat as little or as much as you like at each meal and reduce the incidences of post-meal hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia- which should lower your overall bg control and produce a good hba1c.

Here is the link to the DAFNE website:

What insulin are you on? How are you controlling your blood sugar if you don't know how to adjust your insulin depending of what you eat? For example, for me it can range from 4 - 12 depending on what I eat and the time of day (if the levemir is still working it will be less for example), I'd be in very serious trouble by now if I didn't adjust it.

I think I was very lucky with the nurse and dr I saw when I started on insulin, not perfect (I've only just been referred for DAFNE after about 8 months!) but a lot better than some are that I read about on here!

I'm in novomix 26 units in the morning and 26 in the evenin. I'm just taking the dose that was set for me. I have been a diabetic for at least 13yrs maybe longer. Not sure how long I've been on insulin but a number of years. I have been in denial all this time until this year I went into hospital with DKA in August. I really think I need 'teaching' again as what i've been told over the years hasn't ever sunk in. After reading lots of posts on here I feel I hardly know anything!!

Well, you are trying to find out these things now which will help! If you are seeing a nurse about your insulin they will probably be able to explain a lot, don't hesitate about asking them about everything diabetes related, I'm sure they'd be pleased to explain.
