Today I was having one of the best days in regards to my levels, I have been enduring the honeymoon period for the last week and half. After getting frequent low glucose alerts through the day and night I dropped my insulin across the board (while discussing with my specialist).
Finally over the last few days they have been more stable, unpredictable still (one unit one morning will be too little, while the next day same breakfast will cause me to go low) but stable.
Today I went out to the theatre with some old friends and they offered to get drinks, I thought, bit early in my condition to go for alcohol, I'll have a soft drink, and without thinking requested a J20. About 3/4 of the way through drinking I suddenly thought...o no! This is pure sugar!!! For whatever reason the carbs/ sugar bit just completely disappeared from my mind. Before this, I hardly ever had j20's!
Needless to say not long after it shot up past 8, started on 5. Didn't quite reach 9 on the cgm but close. In the interval I gave myself a quick 1 unit jab (can sometimes be too much) sat down and carried on with the show. It dropped a little then casually went back up to the 8s. I have since taken 2 units when I got home and it only took it to the low 7s.
I have dropped my Lantus again but I know it must wear off before the next one, but if it is too high I struggle keeping it above 4. How does Lantus work? I can't get my head around how it would work in the body, its long lasting, but how? Why does an increase of dose make it last longer as well as making it stronger? Only thing I can think of is whatever the insulin could be suspended in must slowly leak it out, and the more units you have, the more insulin you accumulate. But if it was time dependent how does it run out too soon? Probably a bit too in depth but I like to know these things.
Despite being furious at myself for completely forgetting my condition, it felt nice to be back to normal (if you know what I mean). I just really wish the honeymoon period would stop, I was starting to get my carb ratio and get it under control but now its more of a guessing game. I don't like this game.
