Hi everyone,
Have just read the Gary Taubes book and also a book by Barry Groves ('Trick and Treat') which is the best-researched, well-referenced book I've read since leaving academia a decade ago! In his book Groves p;oints out that some of the drugs diabetics take actually increase weight gain etc (I think we all knew that, really.) and that some of them increase insulin production and thus inhibit the use of fat stores. I take glimeprimide and pioglitazone and my weight loss has virtually stopped. I am eating less than 40gms carbs daily, can't get into ketosis, have increased my excersise regime, decreased my protein intake, increased my fat and my water intakes and decreased my coffee intake (that last one is a real sadness for me - I love my coffee!). So I am thinking to stop the pioglitazone (last Hb1Ac - 5.5 in Feb. BG levels around 3.9-7.00, always highest first thing in the morning!). Does anyone have any opinions/advice/experience of low carbing and these drugs, especially the pioglitazone (Groves specifically mentions this one as being linked to increased insulin production and weight gain). I still have 4 stones to lose and while I'm prepared to go slowly (set a goal of losing 2 stones this year) I do want to make some progress, which is not happening at all just now. Thanks.
