Dukan diet and reversing type 2 Diabetis

Hi folks... I was diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes 4 years ago while on chemo....and to be honest found it easier to ignore the fact! After a 2nd battle with cancer (and won -TYG) and my weight had balloned to over 17stone, my blood sugars were always well over 10... and I could not seem to grasp how to keep them lower. Over a year later I manged to get down to 100kg (15.10lbs) but my blood sugars were still high and there was talk that I may have to up my Metformin dose..

Then I went on the DUKAN diet... and my life has changed... I started in January and have lost 3stone and am down to 82kg - my blood sugars are low - blood results show half all previous results.

But I was getting Hypo's so Im now officially OFF my Metformin from last week ...hurrah. My blood sugars continue to be low..and the hypo's are causing some problems especially at work when meetings go on longer than I've 'eaten for'.... How does anyone out there deal with Hypo's - all advice welcome please. I still have two stones to lose so don't want to come off the diet. Any suggestions?

Welcome,
Well done for winning your battle with cancer and for losing weight.
Although I am personally not too convinced about the long term sustainability of the Dukan diet,I thought I would try to find out the 'official' answer to your question since there are a lot more resources in French about this diet.

On the 'official' forums when someone is diabetic and asks about the diet the official response always is consult your doctor so it's perhaps not surprising I found very little about diabetes and Dukan.
However I found a video of someone asking Dr Dukan about hypos on his diet. She isn't diabetic but she has suffered from hypoglycemia.
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xbvdb8 ... _lifestyle
First he gives the treatment for hypos with symptoms when glucose falls below around 3.7mmol/l (if you listen he mentions 66-65 which is using g/l as they do in France, they define hypos at a slightly lower level than in the UK ).He tells her that the correct treatment is to use rapid sugar.
(as a T1 I use dextrose tablets for hypos which each contain about 4g of carbs, the offical treatment is 15g of fast sugar but I often use less)
He then says to avoid the hypos she must make sure that she takes a soup spoon(tablespoon) of oat bran 3 times a day. She replies that she already does that in the form of galettes.(oat bran pancakes) He then suggest she consults her doctor which she says she has already done and is healthy (so presumably not diabetic). His advice is then not use the attack phase and to go onto the cruise phase. He asks if she moves, exercises too much. Her job involves walking, he tells her to eat well, not to deprive herself of food and to make sure she eats enough protein foods for breakfast. He suggests that this is an unusual problem.
She then asks about using cornflour and how much to use. He says that you can use a tablespoon per day in the recipe for galettes (I wasn't sure if this was in the context of hypos, but I do know that one method used to avoid hypos used sometimes is to use cornflour in snacks, )
I found that there is a Dukan UK forum, you could also ask the same question there.

thanks Phoenix
your reply is a great help - I didn't know cornflour helped in hypo's so will use that in my galettes. I'll check the Dukan forum but I thought you had to be a member to post questions (and it is very expensive!)- I'll look again though and check.

...I carry the dextrose tablets everywhere now and I'm learning to recognise the signs better. My hypo's start near the 4.5 mark but thats because it has been nearer 3 x that fro a long time adn Im hoping my body will get used to the lower numbers and cope better. Eating constantly is helping - but only when there is no extra workload and I can get to food. Eating in meetings is not always possible!
But I am trying to lose that last 2 stone before I consolidate (3rd phase Dukan).

I hear what you say about the long term sustainability of Dukan - but I'm hopeful!

thanks again
Sue
