DVLA issues...help needed.

Hi all.
I am so confused and getting anxious as my hubby is due to go into hospital next week for sugery and I need to drive.

I saw a Consultant at my hospital Diabetic Clinic early December after being referred by my GP for additional support/treatment decisions.

I started Semeglee long acting Insulin on top of my tablets. I was told I nedded to notify the DVLA and the Consultant and my GP said I am fit to drive. I am hypo aware etc and have read all the info re: levels of BG for safe driving.

I sent off the appropraiate medical form to the Medical Dept at the DVLA on 6th December. I know they are taking forever but I can't even hold on the phone, they cut you off. The "live talk" is a bot which makes no sense. I have emailed them for an update but it bounced back a reply stating it takes at least 10 weeks and don't call as they can't give time scales. Stupidly I didn't send recorded delivery so tbh i'm not sure they received the form.

Some info on the site says I shouldn't drive until I hear back but somewhere else it says you can unless your Consultant/GP has said no.

I really need to drive next week as public transport is hopeless and taxis hard to get at short notice. My insurance company said they only need to be told and it hadn't made any difference to my premiums....but they thought as long as I have told the DVLA i'm okay to drive.

Any advice? It seems so stupid for all this fuss over 12 units of Insulin! Am now regretting starting before hubby's op now!

I am tempted to just get behind the wheel but concerned it would be just my luck to have a prang!

Hopefully someone on here can answer you questions type1 diabetic should know at least the ones that drive. I thought has long has you informed the DVLA and you Doctor gave you the it’s ok to drive then it was ok to drive but I’m not on insulin.
You sound clued up on Hypos and know what to do I understand your concerns on driving but if your hypo aware you have time to pull in to a safe area and always have something with you to push up your glucose levels. My sister and grandson are type one they always carry a mars bar or something sickly sweet for if they need it. Wishing you and your hubby all the very best and his speedy recovery.K

Hi, thankyou for your reply. I suppose I am concerned about an incident happening incase it became apparent I hadn't heard back from the DVLA yet rather than me having a hypo. I am aware thankfully and always carry my meter and hypo treatments.
Thanks for your well wishes, am also understandably anxious about next week anyway as it is a big op and although he is very healthy he is 72! Am sure he'll do well.

You will be anxious with all that’s going on and now your husband’s operation but I now from my own experience that the consultant has to explain everything that can go wrong and it’s scary, but they have done the procedure many times and they are skilled at what they do. Mine was a 5 hour operation and was postponed once due to emergency coming in I was all prepared to go to theatre so I know how your feeling. Obviously your husband needs this surgery and you have to try and be strong for him and yourself because he’s going to need you in the weeks after surgery, taking everything into account what’s a car drive to see him after surgery. You will be fine and look forward to when it’s all behind you and you can both get on with your life I was 64 when I had my surgery just look forward to the future for you both. My 3 year license ran out in June and I’m still waiting to hear back. I tried the messaging service but got no help, I tried ringing and ringing over many days very frustrating! I eventually spoke to someone who told me that had my renewal form but are very behind. They sent me an email saying I could drive under Section 88. I also contacted my gp and explained the situation to them and they agreed it was fine for me to drive.
