Dvla revoked driving license doctor error on form

Hello all,i'm stuart and a type1 diabetic for 30 years hb1c 5.9, i recently recevied my usual 3 yrs driving license renewal forms which i filled in and went for my medical which was absolutely fine as i take great care of myself and the doctors is always impressed with me,anyway several weeks went by and i got my letter from dvla and what i thought was my new license but to my horror it had been revoked due to me not having any hypo awareness,i then as you can imagine couldn't believe my eyes and was shocked and confused by this as on my medical the doctor gave me the all clear etc.Anyway i rang dvla and they didn't really sound to bothered about this shocking position i was in ie-work personal life independance financial etc etc they just said to see my doctor which i did and showed him the form and he agreed there must have been a mistake and would support me in this matter,he suggested we wait for dvla to contact him and i refused as i demanded this to be sorted asap, while was was there i rang dvla back up and the person i got this time actually told me on one of the questions the doctor was asked was is stuart aware of hypoglycemia (question 9 i believe) and it turned out he ticked the no box instead of the yes one(fool) so for obvious reasons dvla did see me as a risk and took me off the road.Anyway i got the doctors receptionist to fax dvla right away that he had made a mistake and ticked the wrong box and to allow me to drive again asap as i urgently needed to drive.Dvla recieved the fax and after lots of calls i found out it was with there internal medical group and was been looked at but they just didn't seem to bothered about it,it was a simple error and evidence to back it up.So i thought give my local mp a call which i did and explained the matter and he was more than helpfull he said he could go to dvla and spk to people higher up and try and speed things up,amazingly he called me back later that day and said he was waiting on some senior contacting him back with an update and true to his word he called me back saying they had the information needed(the fax from my gp)and the bar on my license was lifted. The next day a complaints person from dvla contacted me to tell me i was free to dive again so i was overjoyed with this. All the stress and anxiety caused by my gp ticking the wrong box unbelivable.Just wanted to raise awareness to people and make sure your gp fills in the form correctly as knowledge is power.Next step a meeting with his practice manager to raise a formal complaint and to put forward my troubles etc.

What a c*ck up! Glad you got it sorted though. I don't think I'd know what to do if my license was taken away. I wouldn't be able to work, well at least in my current job. What a nightmare!

Yes they don't understand there messing with people lifes but it does seem that dvla are getting more sympathetic when errors are made my gp's etc and speeding up the process to regain the lisence or was it a case of becuase i kicked off and kicked up a fuss and got my mp involved they moved quicker makes you wonder.

Doctors are humans too, a phd doesnt make them immune from making mistakes. Its a part of life.

You have said your docs have been fine until now, so why give him a hard time?

How many GPs have a PhD?

It certainly doesn't make them immune from making mistakes, but that one mistake had quite a big consequence for someone else!

Yes as above the person commenting on why i'm giving the doctor a hard time how about 3 weeks of not being able to drive and lots of extra expense(around £300) such as taxis loss of insurance tax and massive inconvenience not to mention stress to my personal life and independence,is this person real??? maybe he,she should have it happen to them and i'm sure that view would rapidly change,a doctor paid lots of money sinmply shouldn't be making a simple mistake on these forms end of!.

Sorry but I agree that a 'Formal Complaint' is unwarranted and a total over reaction to the situation...

You have made him aware of his mistake, and it responded to his error to rectify it ASAP... I doubt if he will be making the same error again.

Don't forget that your driving licence is a privilege and not a right.. You chose to use this privilege to earn a living with, and transport yourself around, fully aware that you have a medical condition that means that at any point of time your licence can be revoked, not just every 3 years on a Medical...

Your doctor isn't responsible for how you chose to use your driving licence nor his he reasonable for any impact a minor error (as that is what it was) has on how you chose to use your driving licence..

I suggest that if you aren't willing to except this situation or it's impact if a mistake is made, then get a different type of job, that doesn't involve 'needing' your driving licence..

Your angst shouldn't be with your GP, but with the DVLA who's system doesn't allow for mistakes to be rectified quickly..

I am a bit confused, why did you have to have a medical? I have never had to have a medical to get my licence renewed

Hi, im on the doctors side here. Its a complete pain losing your license, and i know cos i lost mine cos of filling in a form wrong and didnt get it sorted for months - with a solicitor involved too. Doctors have a busy work life and make mistakes at times same as we all do. I have a friend just now who is a solicitor and she is putting in a complaint about someone in the court system just now too....cos someone made a human error. I just think its going too far putting in formal complaints etc. Im getting scared of this world of perfectionism....there doesnt seem to be room for mistakes anymore, but humans will always make mistakes. Im sorry you had some bother with your licence, but the doctor did all he could to correct his error. For me - that would be enough :)

Stuart - Can I suggest in the future when you get your driving licence renewal forms through that you make an appointment with the doctor that you are going to name on the form to discuss your ability to drive with them. AFter 30 years of diabetes it is quite common for the warning symptoms of hypoglyceamia to be diminished and it is possible that you may have mentioned this in passing to your GP.
If your doctor has any concerns about hypo warning signs, it is your chance to make the situation clear and emphasise that you test your blood sugar before driving and if going on a long journey, take breaks and do checks. This is now a requirment of the DVLA anyway. Although your hb1c looks very good - this does not indicate what your hypo warning signs are. Perhaps your warnings are fantastic and the doctor simply made a mistake. Personally after 45 years of T1 diabetes I know my warning signs have diminished and I have to do blood tests before driving. Yes DVLA are infuriating. My licence was due for renewal at the end of July and after filling in the forms promptly I received a letter more than a month later asking for further information. I pointed out that the info was already on the original form. I still do not have my licence although I have a covering letter. I hope my licence is not revoked since I live in an area without much public transport and like you have to work.
I personally know two T1 diabetics who have had hypos whilst driving with serious results; one was found off the road slumped over the wheel in a hypo, fortunately unhurt. The other caused an accident which resulted in a fatality to somebody else.
Now that's the sort of mistake I really do not want to make.
