Just wondering if anyone has had any issues with Easyjet and their new baggage policy?

I went away to Bologna this weekend and as we were only going for a weekend we just took hand luggage, which size wise complied with the baggage allowance in terms of the overhead lockers.

However when checking in at the gate I was told that I was not allowed to carry my handbag containing all my insulin, monitor...jelly babies etc and it had to be placed inside my hand luggage. Now at the time, following a rather stressful time getting through security delays and only making it to the gate with seconds to spare I was not really in the mood to argue with anyone...my blood sugar had skyrocketed into double figures through the stress of it all. I did however mention to her that I needed to have my bag with me as it contained my medication but was told quite straight 'one bag only' before being cut off so that she could check the other passengers in. My partner dutifully started to unzip my suitcase to put it in but I protested and said that I needed it with me...so we basically legged it while she was distracted so nightmare was averted. Although only a relatively short flight, it was early in the morning and we'd not had any breakfast so were planning on grabbing something to eat during the flight so that we were all ready to go the other end, can you imagine the drama that would've ensued had I tried to drag down and open my suitcase in the middle of one of those tiny little aisles amid all the trolleys...air hostesses and screaming children? It really doesn't bear thinking about...and my handbag really isn't that big that it wouldn't fit under the seat in front...in fact it did quite happily without causing anyone any kind of problem.

We regularly take weekend breaks like this one and have another two already booked with Easyjet for this year so I have contacted them today to request further information in regards to their policy in this respect but was told again that I was only able to carry one bag and that there was currently no allowance made for medication and that should I require to bring an additional bag that I would need to upgrade my seat costing an additional £80/99euro's. Is it just me...or does anyone else think this is unreasonable? I wouldn't mind betting that the last thing the cabin crew want to deal with is someone having any kind of diabetic incident that could easily be avoided if you are able to monitor yourself and act appropriately. But to force people to spend an additional £80 per seat so realistically an additional £160 if we want to sit together is just ridiculous and potentially discriminatory. I fully intend to make an official complaint but just wondering if anyone else has experienced this.

This is what their website says:

"You can carry medicine and medical equipment in the cabin free of charge in addition to the permitted cabin baggage allowance.

If you need to carry a large quantity of medicines or medical equipment onboard, please get a medical certificate or a signed letter from your doctor listing all the items that you are taking with you. You might be asked to show it to an easyJet representative in the bag drop area or airport."

So she was wrong.

Put the small bag of meds into your carry on and then take it out when you get on the pane and put it under the seat before you get settled. Problem solved? What I always do on Easyjet although not for meds just iPad, phone and bits. From what I have seen they only check as you board. otherwise check your suitcase and take the meds as your hand baggage.

I've flown Easyjet a lot and I've always taken an extra bag as hand luggage as my medical bag. I've never had an issue. I tell them at check in and show them my doctors letter to pre-empt the questions about sharps.

Once abroad my second bag was pointed out as I was going through the gate but I just explained it was a medical bag and was waved on.

@Natalie1974 You obviously got someone who didn't know the rules or coukdnt be bothered.

Having said that, each time I've flown somebody has tried to take their ginormous suitcase on as hand luggage and then caused a fuss and delays, so perhaps the person you met assumed you were trying it on and couldn't be bothered to listen to your explanation.

When booking I now always request special assistance, no one at easyjet has ever questioned second bag which is a rucksack on wheels
