Type 2 Eating low carb while at a client on business

I'm in the first days of trying to stick to a carb budget. I'm just about managing at home, and my blood glucose is better than it's been in a couple of years and I don't want to mess up.

The trickiest bit will probably be while in a large meeting with a number of clients and colleagues. They will probably serve sandwiches and nibbles, all high carb and a disaster for me. Feels rude to bring my own food, feels irresponsible to go off piste just when I'm starting to see things get under control.

Help!

Your choices are eat it or don’t. There are more people with dietary requirements than not these days, it’s no biggie.
Eat the fillings.

I have happily picked out all the good bits and left the bread on the plate - its easy to just mutter " gluten intolerance " if anyone comments :)

My advice would be to eat well beforehand.
It is very easy to resist carby temptations if you are stuffed to the gills with the more filling and satisfying low carb foods.

Plus there is the added advantage that if you put a few grams of carbs on top of a good low carb meal, then the carbs end up digesting more slowly, so you get a slower gentler blood glucose peak. :D

What is your hba1c at the moment and are you on any meds? When I have a ‘working’ lunch I tend to eat the garnish, usually lettuce and tomato, have a couple of sandwiches and just eat the filling or, because my BS is well controlled, I just think ‘s** it, and eat the same, but not as much, as everyone else!

I really struggled for a while when going to conferences or visiting places with only fast food. It really got to me that everything was in bread or with pasta. But I started doing the same: eating just the fillings or toppings. Only once did I get an odd look when I handed back a plate with just the bread from the sandwiches, but I suspect it was because it was far from obvious I had eaten the filling and it looked like I'd taken several sandwiches and just wasted them. It didn't bother me but I'll remember to make it obvious its just empty bread in the future.

It's taken ten months but I'm getting way more confident in asking to change things for lower carb options. Just this week in Cafe Rouge I was asked if I was gluten intolerant after ditching the bread with the starter, and the bread and fries with the main, but I got a nice salad with the main instead.

Penguin. It perhaps depends to some degree what industry you're in. If you're in pizzas or burger buns, best be a bit diplomatic. I suspect though that people will respect that your need to look after your diet, particularly if they see you charging round the boardroom like a lean racehorse.
