Education Day

As I type, MH is at an Education Day for his T2.

I sent him a text to find out how it was going. He says they've threatened to throw him out for being a low-carb deviant, the dietician has taken him to one side to 'advise him in the strongest possible terms' how dangerous a low carb diet is. Any remarks he has made since mentioning low carb diets has been rubbished. He says his card has been marked, he's a dissenter!

His BG readings recorded on his monitor have counted for nothing, and another chap has already been told that his readings - between 20 & 24mmol are absolutely fine. Another person has asked whether or not it was ok to put on 2st whilst following their diet sheet and has been told that he is 'obviously pigging out' - very professional!

I've just texted back to ask what was provided for lunch. MH had written low carb in the dietary requirement box of the booking sheet. I wonder if they catered for him? Place your bets.....

Added 3pm: Lunch was sandwiches, various fillings, white bread. And lots of fruit. No salad, no veggies.

Sorry Ju - I missed that post as I was in Poland for a wedding. How can we educate the educators? They's got their college training which completely trumps our experience.

I've commented more fully on another thread.

Hope your husband stood his ground. They make me FUME!!!!!

I would be inclined to write to the Chief Exec or whatever they are called of the Trust and ask about the quality of the education being provided:

1) Within what guidelines is a BG of 24 ok?
2) What code of conduct are they following when it is ok to tell a patient they are "pigging out" rather than investigating the facts relating to their diet and the poor person's 2 stone increase in weight
3) Can they qualify in what way the 'low-carb' diet is dangerous when compared to the effects of what they are suggesting

I'd ask for a formal apology to be sent to your husband for not including him and his experiences within the discussions and for all member of the team to receive an apology with correct information this time. Also for assurance that the team will be retrained.

Best of luck to your hubby - I'm still fuming .... argggggg

Oddly enough, we got a letter last week asking MH to attend the second day of the Diet Education next month. I don't know if he's going to go, but I think he might. If only to prove that he is still doing well (despite trying to commit suicide by low carb) and see how the other people, who were there before, are doing now. Many were desperate for advice and were given very duff information.

Try giving him printouts of Daisy's standard advice to share with the other participants ....

& the leaders?

I got kicked of 'DESMOND' for promoting the LCHF diet as a way of reducing my BG's,it went down like a lead balloon!!

I emailed the dietitian who gave me the standard advice, & she invited me on the X-PERT course - as an example!

She then reduced the daily carb allowance to 130 g. AND 18 months later invited me back on the X-PERT refresher course.
