Hi All

I have been quite stressed lately with a few things and noticing my sugars rising overnight. In your experience is ths normal? I have upped my basal and sugars are well controlled during the day. Could stress raise my sugars like this?

yes I think that is normal or a normal way to have a bad blood glucose... when I cant sleep like last night my blood glucose is higher in the mornings and that is so unfair... but stress relief is also a help in getting your blood glucose down...

luckily taking a long walk in nature is stress reliefing and also in the more direct way brings blood glucose Down.

Stress does change body chemistry and does effect BG levels and this is why diabetics are advised to stay as stress free as they can manage

Hi,

Do you inject your basal in the morning? If so? Just wondering if it's profile is just "tailing off"?
But stress can get your "blood up". That whole fight or flight thing with the ol "liver dump."

Hey there. I inject my full basal amount at night. It has a 24hr+ profile :-)

Reading up in a book i have "think like a pancreas" it does state that stress can raise your BG.

My BG went up a bit just the other day albeit just for a couple of hours. Now there are so many variables but thinking about it later that night once i had calmed down i realised that the most plausible reason for me was actually stress!

For me it was the fact that the site I'm working on is coming to a close and the site my employer has available for me is really too far to go on my earnings so I'm also job hunting.

I'm a lot calmer now and my BG is ok. Its something that i will keep an eye on and have noted it on my record sheets for future comparison.

I don't think you should change your basal every time you get stressed.

Oh yeah! There were times when stress DOUBLED my reading. Especially after a big meal when one should be aiding his/her stomach to digest instead of stressing and creating more and more adrenaline. I couldn't figure out why I had a 7.0 from the same meal that gave me 13.0 the other day same time, same ui, same everything. Once I realized the problem it all made sense.... thought I was honeymooning or something. And it always happened during a stressful time. When you stress you tend to eat more as well. Double whammy. Try to have a positive outlook and do things that make you feel happy. Do them each day! I know it's easier said than done. Don't let stress bring you down. Don't let the boss take advantage of you. Don't let your spouse, gf/bf treat you like **** for no reason. This disease is about survival of the fittest. Be who you have to be! You'll see those levels go down once you take action. Trust me. Been there done that. Good luck!

From personal experience, definitely yes: both my glucose levels and my blood pressure go up if I'm stressed. Sometimes my glucose levels don't rise by much but it happens.

Thank u so much. You are spot on with the over eating too!! Its all just so much fun isnt it? :-(

On the plus side generally speaking diabetes is one of those diseases that we have a certain amount of control and dare i say we should be thankful of that as there are a multitude of deseases and conditions where control just cannot be.

Yes it can.
I had a stressfull afternoon last week and later on in the evening noticed my BG rocket. The stress plus being on a temporary basal on my pump for a number of hours seemed to combine to create a very high BG.

Stress affects my BS as well. I have a stressful job and when dealing with idiots and the problems they cause my BS goes up and down like a yo yo

My husband introduced me to apple cider vinegar as my bg skyrockets overnight and I often have high morning readings - doesn't matter how much basal I have for some reason.
But anyway, a tbsp of apple cider vinegar mixed with water before bed and my morning readings are within range without fail! Don't know how it works but I'm glad it does!

If you are stressed your body can raise its cortisol levels, which can make you more insulin resistant, which would cause increased sugars.

So if you have stressful day, always on the go bolusing and what not you could manage to keep it normal, but when you lay down and your body goes into repair mode it can pump out more cortisol and your levels can increase.

I wouldn't increase your basal because there is no way to anticipate if your body actually increase cortisol or not, and by how much.. so you could over compensate and have a rough 24hrs lol I would just suggest doing your best to relax, maybe wake up and check your BS in the night and bolus if need be to try to keep it down.
