Hello. Everyone tells me that as I am a diabetic, I should not eat a lot of eggs. Now I was thinking that its because of the egg yolk that contains the bad stuff. However, if I just eat egg whites, are they safe for me? I was thinking to include egg whites into my diet to meet my protein needs. So are egg whites safe foe Type 1 Diabetics or are they DANGEROUS for us? Thanks! :)

Nothing wrong with a whole egg, the yolk is full of goodness, natures own little nutrient bombs, who told you eggs were bad and for what reason? The bad stuff spouted about eggs has all been debunked. I buy 2 doz eggs a week and there is only 2 of us eating them.

There was a kind of a small magazine about Diabetics that I got from a hospital and in there, in the diet section was written that eggs should be eaten only once a week and only ONE EGG as they are not good.

Wrong, I'm glad to say (I've had 2 so far today and 3 yesterday). I feel ok so far .... :shifty:

Well I'm T2 so wouldn't usually comment on T1 but I know many if not most T1s on here use a lot of eggs, it may be a hangover from the bad cholesterol in eggs which is now no longer the advice, hopefully some T1 members will be along shortly to reassure you eggs are perfectly fine.

The advice on egg consumption has long since changed, it must have been quite an old magazine or they have got their facts wrong.

At one point I was eating about 50 eggs a week haha, no impact at all on my cholesterol.

I buy egg white in 2pint containers because I'm a lazy ******, been known to drink it raw a la Rocky or add it raw to smoothies. Never had any issues. I'll probably change my tune if I get salmonella one day.

I usually make my breakfast omelette with a load of egg white and one yolk.

Ha, I still recall a meeting with an (overweight) NHS dietician.

So how many grams of carbs a day are you having?

Er, about 30g.

How many grams of protein?

Er about 250g.

How much fat?

Erm about 300g.

How on earth are you eating that much fat?

Lard, duckfat, coconut oil, avocados, eggs.

I was about 10% body fat at the time, HbA1c was in the 5s.

She then quizzed how much exercise I was doing and advised I should be eating 400g of carbs a day.

Which is when I decided to leave room. Not before saying "How can you sit there with a straight face telling a Type 1 diabetic who produces no insulin and who can't metabolise carbs properly to consume 400g of carbs a day?"

Yep, perfectly safe. I've had 2 so far today and will be having another this evening. I've eaten eggs daily all my life, have excellent cholesterol, and have reached the age of 67.

Sorry, the original question was about egg whites. There are scare stories and counter-scare stories. I haven't seen an "anti" that sounds credible.
