Hi There

I have been type 1 for over a year now, and just got into mountain bike riding and my leg muscles are building nicely 8) 8)

But i would like to start talking some kind of energy drinks to help me go further in my training kind of like

Or max muscle to help build myself up for going longer faster ect. I just wanted to know if this is a defiant NO NO or there is some types 1 who does and what results have they had or which is the best one to use while having type1 diabetes.

Hi James,

Although we are different as Type 1 diabetics, a lot of things remain the same as normo's. I lift weights and also take part in longer exercise sessions, e.g. football, cricket, cycling. I find that my body reacts to various products the same way it would a non-diabetic. E.g. I take protein shakes after lifting weights, I drink lucozade sport as part of my pre-match preparation and during matches. As long as you use insulin to balance the carbs you take on, you can use most products for the use they are intended.

Obviously, there needs to be a degree of dose adjustment around exercise. And I change my dose the same amount regardless of the carbohydrate I'm taking on board. So whether it's biscuits, banana, Lucozade Sport, chocolate, or whatever else, I use the carbs to keep me going, with a reduced amount of insulin. The protein shakes after exercise supplement my meal as usual and I inject the relevent amount of insulin to go with the carbs.

Hope that helps,

So would Creatine Powder be ok :?: :?:

Cheers J

I can't talk for anyone else but I have experienced no problems using creatine. I used to do the traditional loading and maintaining phases and the only problems I experienced was the usual angry temprement that most creatine users report. Now I just have it as part of my Hurricane protein powder before and after training to maintain fairly low levels.

There is very little (if any) research into the effects of creatine on diabetic blood sugar levels.

Anyone else used creatine?
