Boys and girls, I am currently “enjoying” my first proper period of being under the weather since diagnosis. I’ve had the odd scratchy throat, bunged up nose and ears or even the odd gripey tummy, but this is a full technicolour sinus/chesticles infection. We have access to antibiotics, but I’m going to give it another 24-48 to sort itself out before resorting to those. I’m usually pretty efficient at dealing with these sorts of things.

The upshot of this is, I believe it’s elevating my bloods somewhat, but with the naughty old Codefree Batch ending 4144, it’s kind of hard to see the wood for the trees - especially with the odd outrageously, random humungous (for me) result thrown in. Of course, I appreciate we’re all different, and my body will react in its own sweet way, as it does to everything else I throw at it, but I’m curious.

For any of you who have experienced elevated bloods from an infection; what sort of elevation did you see and how long did it last, in relation to your symptoms? Did your bloods moderate as soon as the infection began to abate, or did it take longer?

Yes, you can tell, I’m not very good at being under the weather. I haven’t had too much practise, and I want it to stop RIGHT NOW. THIS MINUTE.

Ahem.

Thanks, in anticipation.

I had a bit of an infection the week of my last HbA1c test.. Great timing given the way they are weighted. I certainly noticed by BS levels notched up that week by about between 0.5 and 1 mMol/l. This started a few days before the fullblown bunged nose, temperature and earache and lasted for about 4-5 days in total. Once the active infection died down and my temp dropped, my levels dropped back into usual range.

I had a similar thread and still have similar infection or man flu,(cold)!
Mine was up on fasting by between 1& 2mol. The only way to keep my bloods as stable as possible was to low carb as much as possible. Keep walking and take paracetamol. I was advised NOT to take any cold/ flu remedies a s these more often contained more sugar than anything else.
I'm would believe e that even the anti robotics would be similar. I would advise caution and ride it out if you can and only use meds as a last choice.
Hope you feel better soon.

It seems everybody around has this curvy!

That is interesting because I didn't see any rise when I had a cold, tooth abscess (caused by blistering the gum and roof of my mouth 3 weeks ago) or the operation on my back.

Get well soon and you are not allowed to suffer man flu so you can't be ill

Hi AndBreathe,
Sounds like you need someone to put a nice warm cosey duvet round you and make you a warm drink.

Ok so thats the sympathy bit done.
Antibiotics, can they alter your blood sugar readings?
I am very new to testing, I have to take one antibiotic everyday. Im type 2, on metformin 2 twice per day, plus blood pressure tablet.

I recently had a chest infection and my levels really shot up. I'm type 1 and found I was taking more than double my usual insulin to keep my levels in my normal range.

It took about 3-4 days of a week course of antibiotics before my sugars returned to near normal.
If you can get antibiotics I'd take them sooner rather than later if I were you.
Take care and get better soon.

Afraid this virus thing is still going round ...mine started in November ...still not right yet ...throat and voice and sinus problems ....
Hope you get well soon ....kat

Thanks everyone.

We always have a couple of different types on antibiotics to hand, because of how we travel and some of the activities we undertake, so I can decide on my own whim to deviate from my plan. But, I'm actually feeling better today, although I had a rough night coughing, spluttering and.all that usual stuff.

According to the bloods I'm testing, I'm up 2-3mmol/l, without factoring in the batch 44 issue. Deep joy. Fortunately, I don't have to have an HbA1c until November, although I will have one here when I feel like it. The initial plan had been for the beginning of next month, but I'll decide as I go along.

The less good news is that Mr B is beginning to show signs of the lurgy, which isn't good. If you think I do grumpy when I'm under the weather, you haven't seen anything! I might have to run away to sea. ;);)

Aha!

Found this thread - and am oozing sympathy to make up for being a late arrival.

Poor you. Good to know you are feeling better. Better enough to leave your Mr B to suffer in peace while you do a little retail therapy? I always find that is a very important convalescent stage that should not be skipped or truncated.

The 'chesticles' ref in another thread threw me a little though. I thought chesticles were girl-bumps. So when you mentioned they were technicolor I drew some rather odd conclusions.
Glad that got sorted out!

Anyway, back to ME! (There's only so long I can focus my attention away from the centre of my universe) the last time I had an infection it was a tummy bug. BG increased consistently by 2-3 mmol/l for the duration, then dropped back to normal.

Erm,.......... Retail therapy is a bit different here to there, so we made do with lounging around watching 6 Nations rugger instead.

Hope you are both feeling better.

Thanks Patricia.

I'd say I'm now 90% better and Mr b around 75%. Another lazy day tomorrow; he has golf, and I feel that time on the beach is required, then, we'll be raring to go for the new week.

Life could be so much worse, for sure.
