Elevated sugar levels

Hi,

I am trying very hard to control my sugar levels but they are consistently high. I am eating correct and having to take 5 times more insulin than usual and they are still running over 10mmol.

My mother recently passed and I wonder if this could have a impact on my diabetes and sugar control ?

Any help with this would help.

Hi Bobos21,

Yes, any sort of stress can have a major impact on sugar levels (usually they go up, but not always).

If this has been going on more than a few days you should probably get the help of a medical professional to adjust your insulin regime to match your new insulin needs (because figuring out whether you need to change short- or long-acting can be tricky). However, since this may wear off suddenly, you will need to be ready to cut back on the insulin quickly to avoid dangerous lows.

Sorry to hear of the loss of your mother :(

Do you have T1, T2 or another type of diabetes? How long have your sugars been running high? (ie above 8.5 most of the time)

And thanks.

My sugars have now been this way for at least two months. Even if I eat something with very little carbs my sugars go high. It's a nightmare.

Ok then, I think you should contact your diabetes team and ask for advice. Are you on a basal/bolus regime with carb counting?
 
Yes on basal /bolus and carb counting misalliance I'm 1 unit for 10g carbs or 1 unit for 2mmol correction. Just now it's more like 5mmol for 10g carbs .

So sorry to hear about your mother @Bobos21.

Stress can have a big impact on bg levels and 2 months is no time to get over such a tragic event in your life, all I would suggest is you start with some basal testing to get your basal dose right, once you've done that you can then look at your insulin-to-carb ratio's.
 
Hi, So sorry to hear you are going through problems but I can't really help at the moment, my BS is all over the place too. Appointment with hospital DSN last night was like flood gates opening ( she was helpful and did listen to me)she said I am sensitive to Insulin and my night time Insulin is now only 10, tbh, I am not coping very well, some options were put forward including my DSN showing my food diary to a dietician, a pump and a psychologist and she will keep in contact with me.
Please get in touch with your hospital's DSN's if you can and I wish you all the best for a happier and a more stable future.

If you are finding that carbs are causing you to spike significantly, you could also reduce the amount of them you eat to try and reduce the impact that they have. Sometimes doing that can make the path a little smoother!
 
I was put on degludec a few months ago to combat my nocturnal hypos, which it has, but this last week or so I've gone the opposite and now can't get it below 15mmol. Reading through the posts I think I am going to increase the basal degludec tomorrow and see if that helps. Thanks.

I have always been thin but yes I have noticed a slight increase in my weight even though I'm trying to consciously eat less carbs. Could be insulin resistance, been diabetic 26 years now, I will start changing sites etc. Luckily I do have an appointment with my diabetic specialist next week.
 
My weight is now better than its been in the past also doing more exercising and eating very clean and low carbs it makes no sense really. Apart from stress factor I can't think what it could be.
