hello all does anyone of you experience elevated level of vitamin B12 from eating high amounts of cheese and meat on low carb eating style

is it an indicator of something important ? disease or a condition ?

Is this a fear or something that’s actually happening? Generally any excess of b12 is removed in urine. If it is indeed too high a dr would be the best one to be asking for follow up if required. I’m eating a large amount of these foods and struggling to even maintain b12 let alone get high levels.

Okay yes you are right I’ll Call the nurse tomorrow it is a bit weird as most are too low in vitamin b 12

Have you had a dodgy result from a recent raft of tests? High B12 levels are, according to Google, uncommon.

No is was the blood test from my GP I just checked today a bit chocking ... hopefully it is nothing serious as I haven’t felt really healthy for a long time ... my iron level was in top so not the reason for my tiredness

Causes i have heard of : recent injection of B 12, liver problem leading to extra B12 being released from stores, lab error in the testing, large doses of B 12 by mouth. Also it can be associated with diseases of a number of body organs and the blood.
Repeat blood testing and discussion with your GP are strongly advised.
Best Wishes

I agree a repeat test would seem to make sense. Usually higher than desired levels of B12 are just passed out in urine.

Has your thyroid function been checked recently, @Freema, as you're alreeady on Levothyroxine? Those levels going off a bit can also cause fatigue, although lower B12 is often present in those with inefficient thyroid function.

If your thyroid was checked, did you have the breackdown of TSH, T4, T3? Vitamin D levels?

Depending on the breadth of your initial recent tests, the Doc might want to widen the test net a bit.

Yes my metabolism is a bit too high too so have to go lower with levothyroxine. TSH too low all the other numbers conserning metabolism normal ,my vitamin D was normal salt a bit too low so drank some salt in water for breakfast

But a bit weird my pulse in the morning is 58 and still my metabolism should be a bit too high wonder how low it will be when I get normal level of TSH , usually ones pulse it high when elevated metabolism

On Levothyroxine, with decent T4 and T3, the TSH levels will almost always be suppressed, and under "normal" range, because the Levothyroxine is providing the T4 (for onward conversion to t3), so the pituitary gland doesn't need to produce any TSH.

I would suggest, from my own reading that a suppressed TSH is not a valid reason to reduce thyroid support. Ideally, many peope find they function best with T4 in the top 25% or range, and T3 over half way in range.

Thyroid function is a bit like lipids. TSH is in itself meaningless at any time beyond initial diagnosis of a struggling/malfunctioning thyroid or pituitary gland. You need the detailed breakdown.

Do you use any specialist spoort resources for your thyroid management? I have found: https://healthunlocked.com/thyroiduk/posts to be absolutely fab, with incredibly knowledgeable people supporting others.

Hi Freema, I also had very high B12 in one of the tests I’ve done sometime ago through medicheck. The comment from doctor included was if you are taking supplement stop taking it. I did take B12 supplement but not within the few days of taking the test. I wasn’t worried but I think I will ask GP for the re-test after reading this thread starting to feel worried ...

Yes I am worried too , but now found out pretty much 90% of what I eat is high in B12 so now I’ll focus on getting some more green leaves into my meals as if folic acid is low and B12 high something in body can get out of whack ... I am thinking lettuce spinach capers and wine-leaves which are high in folic acid

But i would still suggest a repeat of the test and discussion with your doctor, just to be sure.

My GP just dismissed it as too many supplements , I am thinking of changing my GP but need to have my journal sent to new GP then , am going to move in a few months and then I’ll be able to change GP for free , I am waiting for some delayed medication that I need to get first , so I can tell new GP that it is essential to my health
