Endocrinology?

Hi everyone,

I have just been sent a letter telling me I have been referred to endocrinology from a quick Google I have found some link between diabetes and this department but I am a bit confused as I haven't been told I need to see a specialist - could this be anything to do with my "high" (sorry no numbers) thyroid test? I didn't even know I'd had a thyroid test until last week?

After reading a little on endocrinology I feel more confused than when I began so any ideas would be really helpful, thank you

I suspect you are right about your high thyroid test being the reason for your call.

Endocrinology is a specialty of medicine, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases related to hormones.

The human endocrine system consists of a number of glands. These glands produce and secrete hormones which are chemicals that control the body's metabolism, growth, sexual development and function. When the hormones leave the glands they enter the bloodstream and are transported to organs and tissues in every part of the body.



Thyroid gland - an endocrine gland located just below the Adam's apple in the neck; it produces hormones that play a key role in regulatiing blood pressure, body temperature, heart rate, metabolism, and how the body reacts to other hormones. The thyroid gland uses iodine to manufacture hormones. The two main hormones are thyroxine and triiodythyronine. The thyroid gland also produces calcitonin, which stimulates bone cells to add calcium to bone, as well as regulating calcium metabolism.

Insulin is a hormone as well. When I lived in NZ my regular appointments were with endocrinologists although as it is not the same in the UK I suspect yours is for something different.

There are also Endocrinologists who specialise so it could be that the Endocrinologist you are seeing is a specialist in Thyroid problems.

Normally you will be called to see someone once or twice a year at the hospital on my letters if says medicine review this time around but before that it just said a appointment had been made. There not normally anything to worry about there normally made for newly diagnosed, poor control type 2 or type 1 have access to diabetic / endocrinology department.

Thank you all for your replies I feel much better about it now, it was just such a shock coming home to a letter I had no idea about. Thank you once again, I will update this post (if I can find it) after my appointment)
