Energy vitamins

Hi,

Lately I've been having a lot of high blood sugars (they have been around 24) for no apparent reason. So I quit sugar in my coffee completely (now I know unnecessarily, however it's a change I'm going to keep) and changed what I ate for breakfast. This did not help and it was preventing me from running. On a whim, I googled these effervescent vitamins that I had begun taking to see if these could be having an effect, despite no sugar related substances found in the ingredients. As a result, I learnt that niacin (vitamin B3) has been indicated to lead to a rise in blood glucose levels, however I could not find anything to confirm this or any complete scientific studies undertaken. I am convinced that this is the cause of my raided glucose levels and since I have stopped taking them, my blood sugar has returned to normal! Upon further investigation I found some advice stating that diabetics should only consume niacin under the advice of a doctor and should be alert for hyperglycaemia. Just thought I would let you know as nothing on the packaging or logical thinking made me believe I should not be taking these at first.

As a diabetic, I don't know why you were having sugar in your coffee??

Niacin has no affect on my bgs.

My diabetic nurse has always told me to not use sweeteners and just use a reduced amount of proper sugar instead.

Fair enough if it has no effect on you, I posted this so people could be aware that is has the potential to cause an effect as I had no idea and really struggled to see why my blood sugar levels became so erratic

Was it a separate niacin supplement or as part of a mutlvitamin?

I take it as you could identify it as being the causation of your highs that it was a separate supplement..

I have espresso often, don't have any sugar or sweeteners..this confuses me..

Perhaps some of us haven't yet experimented with sugarless coffees - certainly, filter is sugarless for me, but I've never drunk espresso, etc., without a spoon or two.

But I take your point - that's one more challenge for me the next time I choose one :nailbiting:

I'm on a pump so always account for the fact I had half a spoon of sugar in my coffee, so saw no reason to change. Nope, it was part of a multi vitamin but that component is the only one that showed any red flags on the internet to do with blood glucose levels
