ER visit 2 years ago did not test my BG level

I was hoping I would find something in the records, was able to look them up. Prior to my T2 diagnosis last October, I hadn't really had any medical problems but did go to the ER in early 2018 as I was feeling a light tingling in my left arm and left chest tightness, subtle woozy feeling. I was working late as usual and thinking back now it could have been some early sign of my body succumbing to T2.

Hospital found nothing wrong with me, did an EKG, enzyme test, and observations. I was hoping to find that they did a BG test but the only thing they looked for in the blood was troponin. I was discharged with instructions to just stretch and join a gym (thanks). All the vitals they did check were very normal and healthy. I wish they had done a BG test, it really would help me to know if there was any hint back then of diabetic risk...

When I was first diagnosed I did a bit of reflecting on my past to find a reason for my diabetes. Was it my diet, my shift work or whatever? But I soon realised that it didn’t matter when or how I became diabetic or could I have done something differently, instead I just needed to accept the diagnosis and look forwards to achieving control. I was going to drive myself mad instead of sorting my health out. It worked for me anyway :)

Me too. I went back through the old notes and tests. Found quite a number of blood glucose tests going back over a decade way above normal but they weren’t marked as fasting (always were though) and never flagged to me! Frustrating yes. Can I change anything as a result? No. All it means is that I know it was building for a long time.

Still don’t know the exact reasons though. I was never a huge carb eater nor obese (I was overweight though) For me I think it was a part of the whole denial /grief thing about diagnosis. Five surgeries in the 18months prior to diagnosis, genetics and stress also got the blame in my mind. It is what it was though. Focusing on now and the future is far more productive for me.

The past is abstract. It only exists in our minds. Tomorrow hasn't happened yet. The only thing that matters is now. Keep calm and carry on :D

I think that’s a normal response. I went from 94 mg/dL (5.2 mmol/l) fasting to 16 months later at my next “annual” of 389 random, causing a panicked follow up from the nurse to come back for more tests. A1c run then was 11.8%. Nothing else had changed, other than I was eating a lot of packaged foods because I was super busy at work. Oh, my cholesterol had also jumped considerably.

So, maybe what you had in the ER were signs, then again maybe not. T2 can “break through” quickly in my experience.
