ERRATIC BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS

Please help me and my fiancee

She is Type 2 and up until 4 weeks ago controlled her blood sugars (BS) with tablets. She then had Acute Kidney Failure (recovering) with BS level at 26 on admission. BS was controlled in hospital with Lantus and Humalog to a range of 7-10. On leaving hospital this was continued at home. 2 days after leaving hospital she ran a fever and spent the day in A&E where she was given an antibiotic for Urinary Tract infection.

Since then her BS has been almost uncontrollable. She has had just one reading of 7.2 And for the 1st 4 days after the fever was averaging 12. In the past 2 days her lunchtime fasting readings have been 19.1 and 17.2 and other reading between 11.5 (breakfast) and 16.2 (bedtime). This is despite being advised to take 2 extra Humalog units at breakfast from today (5/9/09).

She follows a Renal/Diabetic diet fairly well (timekeeping is poor) she occasionally has mid meal snacks and does not have a meal at supper time. She does not exercise enough and often fails to maintain 20mins/day. Her fluid intake is now approaching 2 litres/day, but previously less than 1 litre'day.

We would appreciate ANY advice or help you can give.

Hi Coling,
I'm sorry no one has responded to your post sooner, but given the problems with your fiancée you need to seek more specialist help than we can offer on this forum. It may be that the infection has not completely cleared which would cause the high BS levels. I suggest contacting your doctor or taking her back to A&E as soon as possible.

Regards
Graham

Hi coling
I've just opened up my computer after a couple of very busy days and seen your post. Graham is right. Your fiance need to bee seen by a good doctor. check whether there is a specialist diabetician iat your local district hospital and try to get her there.

Hi Coling.

Been away this week and only just seen this post.

As Graham states it may just be that the infection hasn't gone away. So a visit to the GP is probably the best course at the moment. I note that you mention the Renal/Diabetic diet ? Once she has gotten back to something like normal perhaps you could let us know what that actually entails ? I'm actually interested to know what difference there are ?

Thanks for the rsponses folks. She is still taking antibiotics and it appears this particular one isn't to good with diabetes or kidney disease. Course finishes next week and blood test Wed so we will see if the infection has gone then

I'll get her to her GP when i am over there next week and she has appointments with renal specialist and diabetic clinic soon.

Just trying to get them to return to normal levels

Her dietician phoned today.
She has changed her Humalog to a 2-part strategy.
Take 1 Unit of humalog for each Unit of Calories in her meal. - 1Unit of CHO is 15g on her diet.
And take the required number of Units according to her BS reading and the sliding scale.

Lets see how that goes.
