Erratic insulin production?

Hi,

Carandel recently wrote on a post that "My nurse reckons type 2s can often have erratic insulin production which means the same amount of carbs can have different effects on your body depending what your pancreas is up to that day."

This rang a bell with me - a very loud one!

I've been wondering whether all this testing is actually worth it for me as there doesn't seem to be any correlation between what I eat and what the meter says. For instance, yesterday. I was very naughty  and had a jam doughnut (it was a birthday in work and I was in a meeting - I couldn't sit there and watch everyone else eating doughnuts  ). Anyway 3 hours later I tested and got a 6.0 (that's good for me). I was surprised - and pleased. At lunch I had a round of tuna and cucumber sandwiches on brown bread (lunch was provided in the meeting) and a mug of green tea. 2 hours later my BG was 11.5! :***: This is not a one-off happening. There seems to be no correlation between what I eat and BG levels.

So if Carandel's nurse is correct, that would help to explain it. It also made me wonder whether my pancreas has been playing up most (if not all) my life. As a child I would have the symptoms of a hypo - I was famous for collapsing in assemblies in school (and, no, it wasn't just to get out of assembly! ) and at other times of the day too. I never put on an ounce of weight - I was 5' 9" and 7st 8lb until my early 20s - underweight - and ate what I liked. They never worked out why. I was given B12 injections, iron, etc. but none of it worked. In my early - mid 20s I started putting on weight even though there was no change to my diet. I wonder if I was under-producing insulin until early 20s and then my pancreas suddenly kicked in and over-produced resulting in weight gain. Now, it's just playing silly b****ers and messing me around! :***:
Has anyone else had similar experiences?
What do other people think about my line of thinking?

Could I have some other people's thoughts on this please? Even if you think I'm talking a lot of rubbish - I often do

I thought by losing weight and testing to see what spikes my BG would help me to take control of this. But now I'm feeling even more out of control as I can't see any correlation between what I eat and BG.

I'm happy that I've lost weight though - 6.9kg according to the scales this morning

Hi. Some people do have erratic insulin production. There are many factors that influence insulin and pancreas behaviour and some are not well understood nor can they all be tested for. I would suggest relying on your HBa1C as a general guide, continuing with a sensible low carb/low-GI diet and seeing where you get to. If you weight is too high then try to get that into the right BMI range. There are variants of diabetes such as MODY which give erratic blood sugar so I would wait and see where you get to then discuss further with the doc.

Insulin requirements do naturally vary quite a lot throughout the day/night in some people. I have found this since going on a pump and having to do loads of fasting testing. I need twice as much insulin in the early morning as I do late evening for eg.
Also, you were comparing a doughnut( possibly 30g carbs) to a sandwich ( possibly up to 50 g carbs depending on the bread and a lower GI probably due to the filling which would remain in the blood for longer)
There will be variations due to all sorts of things such as excercise, stress, hormones, illness.
I would say try not to get too caught up in the details and keep up the good work with the weight loss and healthy eating. Good luck.

Thanks for the input, Daibell and Luckystar.
I think I'll stop checking BG for a while and just concentrate on the low carb diet and losing weight. Maybe I'm just trying to do too much at the same time.
Again, many thanks. It's nice to know you're not on your own around here!
