I buy a big tub of erythritol every couple of months, and have loads on strawberries and use it in low carb ice cream. It seems to be absorbed in small intestine, so no horrible GI effects, and no spikes for me.
Maltitol (and Lactitol/isomalt) are horrible for GI side effects. I got hooked on cavalier chocolate with maltitol in the past, and paid the price.
However, cavalier have just brought out a big range of stevia sweetened chocolate. On list of ingredients, also has erythritol, inulin, but nothing nasty. I think it is delicious, doesn't spike me much, gut fine. Available from avidlite website - I can highly recommend. Obviously, extortionately expensive, but all low carb products seem to be.
