Environment Committee MEPs have voted against imposing the EU-wide use of a “traffic light” system, championed by the UK’s Food Standards Agency, to show important nutrient amounts.

Shame, I find them really helpful. If people don't care they won't pay any attention anyway. I am perfectly capable of Reading the information on the back but find the traffic light thing a great at a glance guide.

I don't like the traffic light system because it tells me sugars, not carbohydrates and thats what I need for comparison and most importantly for dosing. I was a bit worried that if they implemented this it might replace the more detailed labels.
I'm glad that the new EU regs will make it compulsory to put the nutritional labels in a visible place on the front . Though the labels from the UK ( and here in France)aren't usually too bad I have found products from elsewhere in the EU that are tiny and almost unreadable. I'm also glad that they are going to have to include transfats on the labels.

I cant say I'm even aware of this traffic light system, but like Phoenix I always check the carbohydrate contents of new foods not just the sugars

I ignore the traffic lights and read the nutrition panel for "carbohydrates"
