I've been a type 2 diabetic for several years. First of all it was diet and lose weight, then one metformin and then 2. During all this time my weight has been up and down. One year I lost 4 stone. Then I put it back on. I have never attended because I have never been offered an education course. The only dietary advice I have been offered is to look at a poster of the diet plate. The only way I am getting anywhere (and my BGs are still higher than I would lke..) is to read lots on here and try to be proactive. I have bought my own teststrips. How can you be sure you are doing the right thing for your body as it is now if you don't test? I have been surprised at some readings following some foods. I can positively see that walking the dog reduces levels etc. I now keep a record of all my test results rather than be fobbed off by the nurse saying they're ok. I was even told my thyroid test was ok when it quite clearly wasn't and one of the numbers was outside the normal range. I am now being tested again in 3 months. I get so frustrated sometimes and feel so much better when I see the far greater problems of others. That said everyone should receive appropriate care for them as an individual because in the longterm this would be better for them and the budget of the NHS :)

Hi Spark Jack

What is it that you have never attended?

im currently having to change my diet as well to get my blood sugar down. I had already cut out sugary foods etc but have now been told that some carbohydrates are better than others and doing things like eating wholegrain cereals and having brown bread are supposed to help you get better control. My doctor said he is going to refer me for a carbohydrate counting course to help me understand more about it, maybe this would be beneficial for you as well?
i hope i was of some help.
