Hi all,

I just started at the gym in an effort to bring down my BG levels and to lose some weight...

I did an Aerobics class on Monday for an hour and A Step class today for an hour but all I have achieved is a red face, felt a bit sick, shakey and a higher BG reading than my post breakfast reading...

Does this happen to anyone else?? the classes were quite fast paced with a full sweat on (too much info?) LOL

Thanks
Alli

Hi Ali
I do Zumba 5 times a week and you could wring me out at the end but funny how I'm sure I didn't sweat this much before diagnosis lol
Anyway make sure you have a snack before you go and drink lots of water during and after class also take some glucose tablets with you just in case but as for the reading I find that I drop considerably after a class
We're a strange lot aren't we :-)

If you are working too hard, the counter regulatory hormone response can kick in and dump stored glucose into your system.

You need to be clear what the session is trying to achieve and manage it appropriately. I train/race with a heart rate monitor for exactly that reason and have been doing so for years.

If I'm going at a steady aerobic heart rate I'll be chewing through the BG like nobody's business. I started on the bike yesterday at 7.2, after half an hour at a steady HR controlled rate, I retested and was down to 4.2. Time for a quick energy gel.

If I ride a ten mile time trial, my levels will go up as I'm going at near max for half an hour, same with a 5k running race, 20 minutes or less of HR in the 170+ range.

when i started exercising my bg was always higher, some said it was because i was in anarobic zone with my heart rate, which made sense, the machines i use tell you the heart rate if you hold on and my hr was 150-165 so that explained it, months later i still get higher bg after, but when i exercise i tend to try to kill myself as it feels like im doing myself more good, but! my overall average bg is much much lower, i mean the rest of the time, for example im on a break from another back ache and havent done any for a week or so and find my bg to be 2 or 3 numbers higher, i know for sure as i get back to it (this week) my numbers will drop again, so i would say keep at it, you will definately reap the benefits.

theres some info on the heart, i know we are talking about bg but exercise heart rate definatly has an impact

if your doing the classes in the gym, as you finish you could maybee run outside straight after your class and grab hold on the running maching handle thingys to measure your hr if you dont have access to a monitor

good luck with the fitness and weight loss :)

Thanks guys, for the replies, at least I know what's happening now, my heart was pumping through my chest, and my face was still red 30 minutes later. I do have a HR monitor so I will wear it next time. And thanks for the link, I'll check it out!
