Any advice/suggestions about types of exercise a T1 Diabetic can safely do when suffering from severe retinopathy or after a vitrectomy?

@RcI94 . Would suggest speaking to a specialist.
A neighbour, not diabetic, recently had an operation to repair a detached retina. I believe this involved a vitrectomy. She was told not to undertake any thing remotely strenuous. I actually had to take her shopping and carry the bags for her.
Sorry this really doesn't answer your question but your eyes are very fragile hence my initial suggestion of getting advice from an expert.
Hopefully someone else maybe able to offer more.

Thanks @therower. Yes in fact I have to rely on lots of help from others to carry things that I could easily carry before!

The general advice would be to avoid exercises that a) cause a large increase in blood pressure, such as weight-lifting or sprinting; b) have a risk of eye contact, such as squash or kick-boxing; c) may involve Valsalva manoeuvre(forced attempted exhalation against a closed airway), such as weight-lifting or blowing the trumpet; or d) involve head-down movements, such as yoga 'downward dog'.

Following surgery, you should take individual advice from your ophthalmologist about what exercises are suitable.

There is some advice from the Joslin Diabetes Center here:- http://www.joslin.org/info/exercising-with-diabetes-complications.html
