Exercise - How much?

I am working on controlling my BG by diet and exercise. Since diagnosis in September I have come down from 85 to 46 (December HbA1c). Although I walk I decided that I needed to go to the gym so I went on Sunday for the first time ever and did and hour long programme with a personal trainer. When I checked my BG level it had gone up to 8.7 from about 5.1. I have felt very unwell since then and can't decide whether or not I have a bug or if I just overdid it. I have also been told that exercise does not make a lot of difference so now I don't know whether or not to go back to the gym when I feel better and maybe only do half the programme? As usual feeling confused :?

That's a shame you've felt unwell since exercise but as this has only happened once I would say don't give up. Perhaps you ( or your trainer ) overdid things ? 60mins with a trainer seems quite a lot. Try 30 mins of cardio and see how you go ? Anyone I've ever spoken to all say exercise helps, whether you're diabetic or not. Your circulation will improve and you will start to feel a lot better hopefully. Good luck and don't give up !

Hi , i stick to a brisk walk to the supermarket every night after tea it takes me roughly 20 mins each way downhill going uphill coming back it seems to work for me bloods are usually back to below 5.5 when i get back :D

Hi Happycat. I was diagnosed about the same time as you.

I joined a 1 hour 'FitBall' club at the local gym and got home one night and was shaking and shivery cold. I didn't go back but have found walking really brings my count down without stressing me out. I haven't tried pedal cycling yet, and it wont be competetive when I do :) but I'm interested to see if how I react to that.

I would like to follow your quest in finding the best exercise. Good luck.

Thank you for your responses. I am going to go back to the gym but do a much reduced programme and start with 1/2 an hour. I won't be going back yet though as I still don't feel well and I am told that it is not good to exercise when you feel like this. :)
