I've embraced the illness that is Diabetes, made radical changes in eating / lifestyle, to the point I'm really quite chuffed with how things are progressing several weeks in but, there's always a but, can I get the motivation to exercise

Promised myself last week that on Monday I would implement the daily exercise, never happened, Tue/Wed/Thu/Fri all went by the by as well. I think its just a mental thing, never really been the sporty type , hopefully once I get started I'll be fine - I'll need to be, the extreme's from diabetes can be quite debilitating...... you'd think that would be enough motivation for anyone.

I go to the gym 2-3 times a week (had man sniffles this week so only twice). I find while eating less loses weight the gym shapes the loss so muh nicer so I am getting compliments, not just noticing I've lost weight but saying "you look good" that's a boost to the ego! I don't have Sky tv at home so I often go at a time I know some sport'll be on their tv's. Failing that I hope there's women wearing lycra in the gym! Surely that's a few good reasons for motivation

Man sniffles! I'm surprised your back on your feet so quick, these women folk don't know the half of it :P

I gave the gym a fleeting notion Gappy but I've visions of Arnie body builders putting me to shame, mind you replacing them with Lycra clad women puts a different slant on it. I know you should put that out of your mind as its your health that comes first, in all honesty I'd probably be fine after the initial first visit, its just making that first step. Just like you I'm losing the weight but need to compliment that with exercise, cardio and strengthening

Folk used to kick sand in my face as well but a pair of welding goggles soon sorted that out

I'll made a start of some sort come Monday, thanks for your input

Personally, I'm really bad at just walking or going to a gym. I find it boring so don't want to spend the time on it. So I got a strider machine and can spend the minimum time necessary to "do my duty" I find just 10 to 15 minutes does wonders in dropping my sugar levels, and I've lost 4 inches off the waist as well. I do my 10 or 15 mins about an hour after each main meal when I know my sugars will be peaking. I do feel righteous after!

It sounds like you're a lot like me! I know I should exercise 5 times a week, but if I stop exercising for any length of time, it's almost impossible to get going again. I slacked off this summer, and it was tough to get back into it.

But I did it and you can too. I made a list of little things that make me happy. Then I treated myself like a child. I mean after all, isn't it the child in us saying, "Waaaa, I don't want to do this..."?

I wanted to drink more water because when I'm hydrated, I have the stamina to exercise. To do this, I changed the refrigerator water filter and bought myself a pretty new water bottle. (Okay, I bribed myself.) I also wanted to get my dog back into shape, so the minute I get home from work, I tell her we're going for a walk. There's no way she'll let me off the hook. After a week of this, I treated myself to something on the list. I did that every week until I was hooked on exercise again.

Take it a step at a time, and you'll get there.

There's only one thing for motivation - it has to be fun. Anything other benefits that there are won't push you to keep going. If you are sitting at your desk quite excited about your exercise that night, then it won't only be easy to keep it up, but you will find it hard not to do it.

I was very lazy in the past. Forced myself to join a gym back in Feb/Mar. Found endlessly running on a Xtrainer/treadmill/etc very boring, but felt I could keep going. I then discovered Spinning classes and loved it. Started going to this religously three times per week before asking the instructor about other classes. Now, I find myself going to a whole host of different classes and getting a great work out (1,200 kcals usually, ave HR roughly 140-150 and peak HR ofter 180) up to six times per week. Not only do I not find it a challenge to go to the gym, I positively look forward to it.

Obviously I'm not saying "do some classes, you'll love it, all will be OK." What I am saying though, is find something that you love and get stuck in.

I agree with the do something you enjoy. Did just that,i.e. joined a zumba class for the old and uncoordinated, twisted knee and am now hobbling around doing even less excersise than before  !!! Am hoping I can get back eventually as it was the only cardio excersise I have ever enjoyed! Do walk everywhere and am managing to keep that up so suppose thats better than nothing!

Well I started eventually, my promised new start day went by the way ...again, as did the week, but for some unknown reason a week past Sunday I shocked the dog by mentioning the 'walk' word and a 40 minute brisk walk was had, did that for the whole week, did I enjoy it? tbh no, even less when the anticipated weight loss never over the week never materialised. Still ongoing and finding it less of a grind :D

What did surprise me was the impact it had on blood sugar levels and I can see where skinnymaria11 is coming from with her list of treats, I reckon I dropped approx 2 points in BGT results after a 40 min brisk walk.

I'll scratch the Zumba right away  ..hope your knee is well on the mend.

Still to find that motivation/fun factor but I'm more positive in my approach as I can feel the benefit it is having on the body, bought a few home gym pieces so we'll up the ante.

Hooked up a Tv signal to a bedroom so as I can watch telly and exercise, we'll see how that compares to listening to music on the ipod.

I mentioned earlier I was disappointed in the weight loss after a week of exercise, my expectations were high due to the change from being sedentary to active, however I did lose weight just nothing like I had hoped for ....but not letting myself get hung up on one set of figures, overall my weight has dropped every week with a current combined loss of -20.5lbs, weigh-in due tomorrow. 'One person at a time please", Grrr hate them talking scales :P
