Hello everyone,This will be my daughters fourth week with her pump,However her levels still arent great.I have just looked at the overall targets and we have only had 28% of the readings within range over the past week.Plus we are still having to check two or three times during the night.I have to admit that all the constant testing etc is really getting me down at the minute.Im wondering if it is ever going to come right.Am I expecting too much too soon, when I ring the nurse she doesnt seem to suggest much and I am becoming very frustrated.Do you get another appointment with the specialist to learn about the different types of bolus?Or are you given a few months just to get used to having the pump.I Know Im very impatient but I just want it all to work like I thought it because at the minute there is no difference between the pump and injections in terms of bloodsugar reading.I would be greatful for any advice.

hi

the pump is hard work there is no doubt about that, i have to say for us it hasnt been perfect but dylan used to get readings in high 20s or even off the scale now we dont get that 12 is about the highest his bloods are no where near perfect but they are the best they have ever been. we have always done lots of testing so i dont find it too wearing and dylan is of an age where he can test himself i just supervise. i think we prob had 2 or 3 weeks of waking in the night and now i sleep sounder than i ever did being as he hypoed alot in the night on MDI.

i cant tell u much about what the nurses should or shouldnt be doing as we havent seen them since dylan was put on the pump luckily im confident and carry on tweaking things gradually to bring his hba1c down some more. if things arnt going to plan try doing some basal testing to see if the background insulin is at the right level if thats is right change the bolus if its not u need to tweak it some.

keep smiling having a child with diabetes isnt an easy road whatever their treatment we do the best we can for our kids no one can ask any more of us

Sorry Martina that you are finding things tough going at the moment. It will get better.

The more confidence you get at tweaking, the better. Communications with pumps DSN's and Consultants etc differ from area to area.

I believe that most of us are advised to give pumps 6-8 months to get used to. You as a parent are going to find it even more stressful, than us as adults trying to balance ourselves. Don't beat yourself up about it....it gets easier, honest.
