Expensive, this low carb stuff...

I'm having the same problems everything is so expensive these days, I have tried cheaper cuts of meat but don't enjoy them, and eggs are getting expensive as are most basic foods as Sue says more veg is an option.

Cheaper cuts are OK ,you just have to cook them a bit longer.Pot roast cuts like brisket and it comes out as tender as better cuts of beef and tastes better too.
 
Knowing how to cook is the key. There are plenty if books out there on economical cooking.
In my case, I also shop carefully and eat enough, but not more than I need
 
Buy the cheaper cuts of meat, mince, turkey, chicken, etc and you can go even cheaper by shopping at places like Iceland or FarmFoods or any other frozen food shop, another diabetic on low carb buys cheap chicken/boiling fowl and makes broths and soups and casseroles from this with chunks of meat in it, she swears as this being good comfort food on cold weather days.

I dont eat meat, I have eggs, cheese and fish, dairy products, kefir and nuts - I often buy frozen fish, its cheaper or tinned fish, shop at Aldi, Netto or Lidl, buy frozen vegetables, they are sometimes fresher than the veggies that hang around supermarket shelves for a few days.

Fill up on more vegetables, depending how low carb you are going, have some porridge (the steel cut oats), a small amount will fill you up.

A cheap slow cooker is a must for cooking cheap cuts of meat. You can set it to come on in the morning before going to work (using a timer device), put everything in it including some veg and by 5pm youve got a really nice dinner waiting to be dished up.
 
Yep, I agree a slow cooker is fab. You can buy brisket, put it in the slow cooker before going to work and it's as tender as a prime cut when you get home.

Slow cooker.... great idea - my Gran gave me one and we used it fairly regularly over the years, but it broke... so if I am replacing it - how big (there are 2 and a half of us) and what kind?
 
Don't get too small a slow cooker, Youc can do a little meal in a big one, but not vice versa.
I'm at home, but use mine almost daily. I also use a pressure cooker.
In fact it's the cheaper cuts of meat which have the most flavour. I find that sweet root vegetables like carrots, onions and parsnips ( watch the carbs!) go beter with lamb than beef and beef stews brilliantly with peppers.
Chicken stews wonderfully with mushrooms and tomatoes.
 
What do you put in to make the sauces/gravy? I always used to use packet sauce but they can have a lot of carbs, and let's face it, that's hardly cooking, is it!?

Hi

All I do, is put the meat, chicken etc in bottom of slow cooker, shove on top your veg including jacket potatoe if want one and then crumble up an Oxo cube and then pour on a mug of boiling hot water. Put slow cooker on to Auto and then forget. Everything cooks really well. The meat falls apart and is lovely and tender and the veg all stays solid but cooked. When you come to take the meat and veg out of the dish, you can then add one or two teaspoons of gravy graunules to the stock water and then pour that over your dinner. Heaven !!

The best thing about slow cookers is that they dont cost too much in electricity to use - about the cost of a 100w light bulb I think.

Just make sure that when you buy one you get a removeable casserole dish for easy cleaning.
