I've recently been prescribed Forxiga after trying Victoza for 6 months. While the latter gave me good BG control, it also gave me chronic nausea and /or heartburn and constipation!! However, although I was warned about the potential for UTI and thrush with Forxiga, I wasn't told about the possibility of DKA but discovered the risk of this via this really useful community. Even knowing this, I started taking the new drug, but have invested in ketone sticks and so far, so good. There's a but of course - I also test my BG regularly and, since I've been taking the Forxiga (5mg), my sugars have risen dramatically. I am used to being in the 6 to 7 range, but my pre-breakfast reading has been 8 - 8.2 the past few mornings and my pre-dinner reading yesterday was 10.1, and tonight hit the heights of 13.3 which I've not experienced for a long, long time.

So, has anyone else experienced this? If so, did your bloods settle back down? I've agreed with my DN that we'll review after 3 months, but if it's going to continue like this then actually, I'd rather put up with the discomfort of the victoza knowing that my BG's are ok-ish.

Hi there. I am on forxiga and it has helped my sugars quite a bit. I do believe that diet still has a lot to do with it. Forxiga works by blocking glucose reabsorption in your kidneys. Instead of the glucose going back into your blood it gets excreted in the urine but only up to about 70 grams per day. If you eat too many carbs it will be too much for the meds to eliminate. It will also cause massive amounts of sugar in your urine which will feed yeast and bacteria and give you UTI's and thrush. I am low carb but I get liver dumps. The forxiga seems to be able to smooth out the spikes from this and keep my sugars much more even. I have noticed if I eat a bit more carbs I have to wee more and get a strong almost chemical odor to my urine. DKA is extremely rare with this drug. I hope this helps, I am not a doctor and this is only my own experience. Good luck.

Teresa - How are you otherwise than your blood numbers being up? Are you well, sleeping, stressed, less active or anything? There are so many things that can impact out blood numbers.

Unfortunately, I don't know enough about either Victoza or Forxiga to know exactly hos they work. What I'm wondering is if your Victoza worked "per dose" (i.e.; take a dose and see and impact) whereas your Forxiga perhaps works by building up in your system over a period of time. In other words, for your current situation you have immediately lost the impact of the Victoza, but not yet getting the full benefit from the new drug.

That is entirely speculation on my part and others may have more in depth knowledge, but perhaps you could look it up, on the leaflets you will have had with your meds, or on the internet.

Good luck with it all.

The usual dose for forxiga is, I believe, 10 mg per day and you are only on 5 mg. It would also seem to be very possible that your blood sugars are rebounding due to stopping victoza although I know nothing about victoza personally. It might be a question to ask your doctor.

Hi Teresa... Just wondered if things were improving. I have been on Forxiga for a week and was taken off the Victoza as well ..
Feeling great, but sugars rising to the high teens, Have you started to notice a downturn yet???

Hi - I am about to make an appointment to see my DN as, having taken into account what folk have said about 're-bound' and the dosage prescribed to me, thought it best to wait a week or two to see what happens. Actually nothing much has - my bg readings are still higher than before (although I have had a couple of morning readings in the 6's) so am going to ask if I can increase the dosage to 10mg. Apart from that, I feel great @greybags -so much better than when I was on Victoza that's for sure!
