Hello good people I was diagnosed more than a month ago with type 2 I was put on 500m metformin twice a day today my doc changed your medicine to junamet my bg level was hovering between 150 and 200 after meals is it a wise decision shudnt he should have increased metformin dosage to 2000 before putting me on junamet as it has horrible side effects ???? Any advice is appreciated

How are you managing weight and diet ? My numbers took a couple of months to come down too but losing weight and diet changes did much more than pills. By the way, Junamet also contains metformin anyway.

But metformin is a lot safer drug that’s why I’m worried he made a mistake I am doing exercise and trying to get my weight down watching what I eat but I need advice he should have increased the dosage to 2000mg per day and if that hadn’t worked he cud use junamet thanks for replying

If you are not happy with your medication then you should talk it over with your GP. We are not doctors or experts so we can't say why your doctor has prescribed this combination drug for you.

What is your diet like and how much excercise do you take? These things are important for the good management of Type 2 Diabetes.

I eat proteins mostly walk for 25 minutes trying to bring my weight down I just feel horrible with the side effects of this medicine

Have you lowered the amount of carbohydrates in your diet? I am on Metformin so I do not have experience of Janumet. I would advise that you make an appointment with your doctor and tell him about the side effects and how you are struggling. Did you have the same side effects when you were taking Metformin?

Very good questions no I had no side effects on metformin I have lowered the amount of carbohydrates in my daily diet well mostly body aches very horrible body aches and headaches

MTS1980 I don't know about Janumet side effects as take only metformin. If you want to lose weight and control BG at the same time you will need to reduce both carbs and total kj at the same time. We don't know your circumstances and can only relate our own experiences.

Just to give you an idea. I was 106kg at diagnosis and consuming 12,000 kj per day without worrying about food groups. Fasting BG was 15.5 mmol/l ( 279 on the US scale ). Cut down to 7500 kj and lost 12kg in 4 months. Cut carbs to only 60g / day and low GI only and now BG is really good. The weight loss and attention to diet did a lot more for me than pills. There is a lot of good info on this site about diet. It may pay to spend half a day trawling through it.

Then it seems you must see your GP with a view to adjusting your meds.

Thank you sir I am trying thanks for helping me ur so kind

Inwill was just looking to hear ppl here who using junamet

Just to clarify, Metformin has only a very slight affect on blood glucose levels. Even at a higher dosage the effects are minimal, it really works in the background to aid the liver.

That's OK. I'm reminded of the wonderful people that assisted me at the start and provided help in those early, nervous and desperate days. Vigilance, discipline and education are paramount now for the remainder of your life. Don't let it beat you.

I understand. Sometimes it can take more than one month for a change in diet to show better blood glucose levels especially fasting levels. Keep at it, you sound as if you're determined to tackle the condition head on, well done.

Just wondering if you changed your diet to lower carbohydrates at the same time as your gp changed the medication?

Some of the effects you are suffering may be related to your body adjusting to lower carbs rather than the new medication - unfortunately, if that is so, it may be difficult to work out exactly what is causing your symptoms.

If concerned about your medication your GP is much better placed to help you than us.

Let us know how you get on
