Extra protiens for body building

Messages

Hello,
Im a type 2 with oral meds and 40mins of treadmill everyday. my glucose levels remain well under control. Recently, ive started a bodybuilding and my trainer says I need to have extra protein in order to help my muscles grow. Taking in consideration the concept that proteins pile up in the kidney if taken in excess, im a bit confused if i should be taking those extra proteins.
otherwise, im on a regular protein low carb diet which works for me just fine.

Hi,

If you are worried about how much protein your body can take, you should consult a medical expert.

General theories state the body can absorb about 30g of protein at a sitting before it starts filtering it out and excreting it. This is the amount a protein shake usually contains if made following the directions.

The books I have read and hence the theory I follow is this: To gain weight you need a calorie surplus on days that you lift weights so that during muscle recovery your body can take on that fuel and grow the muscles. This can be any type of fuel, e.g. protein or carbohydrate, but the theory behind using protein shakes is that it is metabolised more slowly. Hence it is not converted so quickly into fat. Rather, it feeds your body slowly during the muscle repair time after training.

I also fuel my body 1-1.5 hrs before the gym to provide the energy to work out, which obviously adds to the calorie surplus. I am type 1 diabetic, so have considerations to make with insulin doses. I don't know what kind of diet you're on. In general, the body needs all types of nutrients, an this is especially important when trying to build muscle. So don't forget the vitamins and minerals you get from fruit and vegetables too.

All in all, I aim for a balanced diet and no more than 30g of protein in a sitting. If you are worried about how much protein to consume, I say again, consult an expert: are you provided with a nutritionist or diabetes expert as a type 2?

Good luck,
Sam.

Hello!
Things you told were quite helpful, thank you.
Yes, I have under consultation of a medical expert and following a balanced diet plan. So far my glucose levels are fine. However, I wanted advice from someone doing the same thing. Thank you again for your reply.
Cheers
