Does anyone know why it is that the diet regime recommended by the Newcastle team is so severe over a relatively short period of time? Would weight loss over a longer period work just as well? I understand the weight loss is associated with prompting the body to dispose of fat built up around the pancreas which prevents it from working efficiently so I wonder if such prompting is not achieved through gradual weight loss?? If anyone can shed any light on this it would be appreciated. Incidentally I am pre-diabetic and have lost about 10% body weight over 3 months through reducing sugar and carbohydrate intake which has led to only a very small reduction in blood sugar level. (HbA1c 45) I'm looking to improve on that. Thanks. Chris

The diet was designed to mimic the amount of calories someone who just had bariatric surgery would eat. Gradual weight loss should have the same result in the end.

Many thanks. .....that's very useful to know.
