Hi,
Im approx 7 weeks pregnant, been type 1 for 30 years. I have a detaching retina in one eye and need surgery to reattach very soon. In my other eye, i need a lucentis injection, again, very soon. The problem is now that im pregnant, the dr doesnt think i can have either treatment and my choice was to terminate or lose more vision (im losing it very rapidly) Has anyone ever had any of these procedures done while pregnant? He doesnt want to give a general anaesthetic as theres risk to the baby, and under a local, he said its quite a horrific op and my body would be so stressed, also causing risk to the baby. The lucentis has never been tested on pregnant women. Im totally lost as to what to do. Ive suffered 3 miscarriages over the last 4 yrs, so this baby is so very wanted. Feel devastated and need to find out as much info as i can about this, but any personal stories would help me so much. Thankyou

Hello I am truly sorry to hear of your awful eye problems regarding your pregnancy. What a horrendous situation to be in. I can't imagine how you must be feeling right now :(

I had an eye operation 5 weeks ago and my retina was being pulled away by blood vessels and I also had a hole. I had my Op under GA, but I didn't have the worry or concerns of being pregnant as well.

I hope someone will be able to help you with some support and advice. My heart goes out to you.

I wish you all the luck in the world and I'm sending you a big (((((((((HUG)))))))))

Take care, with best wishes RRB x

Thank you Robinredbreast :)

How quickly did you recover from the op? Can you tell me all about it, please? Thank you

And thanks for the hugs!!

Hi andreabow

I had my Op on August 28th under GA, I had a pre Op assessment and on the day I had to get to Southampton General by 12.30( not my local hospital) they decided to do my Op straight away, I changed into a gown, questions and BS tests then I went in, after the pre op procedures I woke up with a nurse telling me the Op went well and I didn't know a thing about it. A gas bubble was put into my eye to keep the retina in place. The next morning I saw the surgeon who did the Op and he said all went well and I could go home. I had a clear eye patch and had to take 11 eye drops per day, for 2 weeks, then reduced eye drops for another 2 weeks. I didn't need any pain killers, I had to take things easy and no heavy lifting, swimming or sports. I recovered very well, apart from the high blood sugars for about a week and only to sleep on my left side and not to lay on my back in bed. I had a review 3 weeks later.

This is the written procedure:- Right internal tamponade - C2F6 gas, pars plana vitrectomy, panretinal photocoaglulation - endolaser, retinopexy - endolaser 28 August 2013.

Have you talked it through with your partner or close family ? whatever you decide to do, you will be in my thoughts and prayers.
If you need to talk about anything, please feel free to pm me.

With my very best heartfelt wishes, take care,

RRBX
