Hey guys - can eye floaters be related to diabetes?? A few weeks ago I moved countries for work (very stressful period, so could be related to that), but since then I have been seeing a lot of floaters in my vision. I've never had this issue before. I don't have a doctor/hospital yet so I can't get it checked out until I'm signed up, but in the meantime I was wondering if anyone knew if this could be related to diabetes or whether maybe it's just the stress? My last eye test said I had some background retinopathy but I've never been told I have any issues with my eyes.

Floaters can be related to T1D but they can also not be related to T1D - I have colleagues who have some and who are not T1D. Other causes can include high blood pressure, amongst other things.

I’m type one with background retinopathy in one eye and sometimes get these.

I had laser surgery a couple of years ago (lasik for correction so I don’t need glasses) and get it a little more often since then.

Had it checked several times and have been told it’s nothing to worry about and is quite normal as you get older. Something to do with the gel inside your eyes shrinking; I think they said.

Don’t worry too much but if you are concerned then of course get it checked out.

My advice would be to get them checked out. As people suggest both diabetics and non diabetics get them. I have had them quite a Lot caused by bleeds from retinopathy. Best to get checked to be on safe side

Floaters can be harmless but they can also be a symptom of proliferative diabetic retinopathy. In the latter case the floaters are small spots of blood when fragile new vessels tear. It is unusual to go straight from having background retinopathy to proliferative retinopathy within a year but it does happens sometimes. It would be wise to get your eyes checked in the next week or so - an optician should be able to do this.

I work in optometry and usually floaters aren't associated with diabetes, but as everyone else has said here, go get it checked with your optician, unfortunately though there's not a lot you can do about floaters!
