Eye problem

I've only just been diagnosed with borderline diabetes, so most of the complications of diabetes are mostly things used to scare me (or for me to scare myself!). We do NOT live in a world where you have fasting bg of 7.9 today and your foot amputated tomorrow.

So, I'm very wary of attributing any problem to diabetes ATM - especially as I have other serious medical problems to deal with.

However, I've developed an eye problem in the last couple of days - the white of the right eye has developed a "bloodshot" patch just at the edge (so I can, just see it in a mirror when rolling my eyes sideways). Could this be diabetes related, and should I worry about it or report it?

I don't want to develop the habit of going to my GP every time anything happens, not least because she would get very fed up with seeing me in her surgery. Just at the moment it would be very difficult, anyway, since I am virtually housebound because of the snow (sticks + snow = fall = problems).

So does anyone have experience of when you should take your eye problems to the doctor - bearing in mind that I have to "ration" my visits?

Current "treatment" btw = eye bath and mild saline solution to stop irritation.

If it is painful or causing you problems with mobility because it is affecting your sight then you should see the doctor about it.

There are many things this could relate to such as medication, blood pressure etc. If you are worried about it does your GP do telephone consultations ? This way you could ask without risking your neck on the ice !

As you say, not everything is Diabetes related but the doctor should not be 'fed up' with a genuine concern.

I urge you to get your eyes checked by your GP, because it could be something needing attention and only a doctor/eye specialist can diagnose if there is a problem. I do understand your mobility problem and if you cannot get somebody to take you, maybe you should phone for a taxi once you have an appointment time.
We only get one set of eyes and we neglect them at our peril. Your GP will not think you are fussing because we do have to be vigilant with diabetes.

Much like others have suggested it's best to get this check-out by your gp, sometimes things that may seem trivial can be anything but, so for peace of mind ring your gp.
