Eye screening/tests

Please could you advise? I've recently had an eye test; prescription is different from last time tested and am currently in process of having lenses updated. Mentioned in relation to the diabetes was eye screening. My optician doesn't provide this service but has said I need to ask the doctor to refer me for this. I understand it's with use of a camera to check for subtle changes but would this be using photographic bright light?

Also, as I don't drive, since I'm getting my lenses upgraded to the new prescription spec, is the screening essential? Just wondered....? Thanks for any help/advice in advance!

Hi ssue.

Your Optician really should have told you to go to an Optician with the correct equipment if he /she knew you are a Diabetic ? I presume he/she wanted the money ? Screening is essential as it is a preventative measure as well. You do not need a referral, you can just walk in to an Optician's who provides the service and get an appointment. I would be inclined to ask why this wasn't explained to you ??

The equipment used is specialised and there are many Opticians in the country with this equipment. An ordinary sight test is insufficient. Your local PCT should give you a list of addresses.

Extract:
Everyone with diabetes should have their eyes examined each year. This may be carried out by the doctor who looks after your diabetes, your GP, or through local programmes that use an optician or diabetic screening eye vans.
If there is any evidence of retinopathy picked up, you will be referred to an eye clinic. The frequency of follow-up then needed depends on the extent of the retinopathy. (end)

Here is a link to a site which explains DR in all it's forms and is where the extract came from.

Having the photo's taken is just like having a normal photograph taken. The latest equipment is far more sophisticated.

Hi Ken!

Many thanks for your very helpful reply and advice! :) Certainly will be following up on this you can be sure, specially as I have sufficient information to hand now!

I'm picking up the lenses for my glasses tomorrow morning so this is the perfect opportunity to do precisely that, cheers! :)
