Eye test

I have just had my eye test and wish to make two points.

Firstly, the nurse on the course I went on, a youngish woman, told us that the test would be VERY painful, eye drops that make your eyes sting like crazy BUT is an essential check. MUST suffer and do it. Everyone is dirterent but for me, it was NOT even mildy irritating, not in the least bit painful or a problem. I mean, here I am typing this less than an hour later! My pupils are very large, which make me look 'stoned' or 'sexy' (I'll take the latter, lol).

Secondly, I was told to take along the glasses I wear for television or driving. What they REALLY mean is take along your BEST prescription for distance. I am supposed to be highly intelligent (lapsed Mensa member) but I got it very wrong! Feel rather silly! As I do not drive I put on my tele specs. I am shortsighted but my eyes are gradually improving and going the other way (as they tend to do in middle age). MY tv is a few feet in front of me so I wear specs THREE SCRIPS OLD to watch tele in, or none at all if I don't need to read anything on screen. So surprise suprise I could not read as much as I should have on the eye chart. I was told it was OK as there is a 'cut off point' and as long as you can read further than that point you have 'passed the test' and I did so, but they explain that 'best glasses' is what they meant. Doh! So, now you know, wear your BEST 'need to read a wallchart' specs. Next year they will think I have had laser treatment as I read down to the bottom line! Lol

Just want fellow newby diagnosed people to know that the appointment was quick and easy for me and may well be for you too, have fun!

That's really encouraging as I have to go for my eye test on 31st December. I won't wory too much about it now.

Re: Eye test

I've had a few retinopathy screenings now and really there is nothing to worry about. The drops do sting a bit but it's only one in each eye and the discomfort lasts for just a couple of seconds. One word of advice...whatever the weather is like make sure you take sunspecs with you to wear for a couple of hours afterwards. Your pupils will be very dilated, unable to contract when exposed to any light source, and it's very uncomfortable! Large pupils were at one time considered to be a thing of beauty, so women used belladonna to enlarge their pupils. God knows how they managed to see or how much damage they caused themselves! Good luck with your test :)

Re: Eye test

I'm into my 5th year of retinopathy tests. The can sting quite sharply but, as Geri says, the discomfort only lasts a few seconds.

My hospital test centre is very good, BTW, - they let you have a look at the photos they've taken and (in my case) have always given me an immediate provisional all clear, saying that, although they need to have a specialist look at the images and confirm their findings to my GP, they can't see anything wrong.

Not sure why your nurse is making such a song-and-dance about it, though. I can think of a number of tests that are far, far worse to have done ......
