Hi everyone. Diagnosed a few weeks back T2. On tablets. Was 36.6 now 7 and under but my eyes are really bad. I can't read small print and hardly read my phone now. Should I worry or will my eyes get better in time. Am off work as I need to drive and also need to read notes for patients. I can't read the notes. This is freaking me out guys.

It's quite common and may take a few weeks of stable blood glucose before your vision returns to normal. Some people buy ready readers (e.g. from the pound shop) to tide them over. If your vision hasn't improved within 6 weeks or so, see your optician. Meanwhile. you should get an eye screening appointment within 3 months of diagnosis.

Thanks for your reply. I wear glasses anyway but as I type this it's probably an inch from my face. I have a meeting with my DN 22rd March but don't think it's an eye screening. I may be should ask for one.

The medical term is 'transient hyperopia', and although it has been known about since the 19th century the precise mechanisms are still not fully understood.

The degree and duration have been correlated to the HbA1c before diagnosis and the rapidity of glucose control. The mean effect on sight peaks around 1.5 dioptres but can be over 3, as it was for me.

The key word though is transient. Four weeks typically, six not being unusual. Tends to tail off more slowly than it develops.

When I first joined this site in June last year this was my first question! I was convinced I was going blind. As the others have said it is a "good" thing as your body adjusts to a new, better level of blood sugar. You may well need a new pair of glasses (I did) but wait until your tests have been stable for a few weeks before you order a new pair. It takes a while to become stable.

I had poor reading when first diagnosed but has greatly improved now my levels are lower.
One thing I have found, when I do go overboard with eating the wrong things, I get blurred vision which scared me. I now know that it's a reflection because my blood levels are high
