How important is it to get eyes tested with type 2 diabetes please?

I have not had mine tested for about 8 years, I only use specs for reading and just buy cheap ones
due to costs .

Should the Docs send me or do I have to book to go to opticians myself?

You do not say how long you have been diagnosed T2. Every diabetic in the UK is entitled to one Retinopathy Test per year - this is a priviledge not enjoyed in many countries. Ask for it and use it. Also, see an opthalmologist or you could end up like me (see my posts re: Blurred Vision, etc.) I love Specsavers but some of the tests needed for Diabetes are not available with them.

see your doctor who should have already given your name to the screening department...

If you've got diabetes whether T1 or T2 you should be having your eye tested both by the screening and your optician..
 
PS you aask your clinic to make an appointment for you - sometimes the technician comes to the clinic or you just may be referred.

The retina screening test is essential - dilation drops & photographs of your retina - any capillary bleeds will show up, which can be laser treated. That is done annually, & is free. You can still buy your glasses in the pound shop.
 
Thanks everyone and just in time Isee the diabetes nurse on thursday this week so will mention it.
I was diagnosed type 2 on the 6th March also underactive thyroid and high cholesterol. the Doc wants me to have an endoscopy as one of my tests is not normal and my sister has gluten intolerance.
I really do not want to do this at the moment. I have no symptoms at all and feel that I have enough to cope with at the moment
with diet , bloods, carb counting etc, in fact it has made me feel very depressed and am feeling very down.
