Well done with the diabetes, knopfler - I'm glad the low-carb helped. It's the best way for many people.
I remember you from when you first joined, and I think we touched on the alcohol then - I too drink too much red wine, and I know it doesn't do me any good. Alcohol causes inflammation in the body, which affects internal organs including the pancreas, and can cause joint and muscle pains too. Added to the fact I was possibly never legally fit to drive - it takes so long to clear the body! And it keeps me fat
.
I tackled my alcohol intake by stopping - a day at a time. I would tell myself - "No bottle today, but you can have one tomorrow". Now I only drink at weekends, and I try not to buy the stuff if I can. If I open a bottle I drink the lot - the only way is not to have it in. I can now go for days and weeks without touching a drop, and I know I feel much better for it. I sleep better, too. My liver is okay for now, but it won't last forever - and it's noticable that my liver function tests are better if I haven't drunk for a while beforehand.
It pushes my cholesterol up, too
After Christmas, I'm going to have a real try at giving up the whole way to my next HbA1c in March. That will help me get a bit more weight off, as well as helping my over-stretched finances  My aim now is to get my HbA1c under 5. Alcohol actually puts my BGs up over time - possibly because I lose a bit of control and eat more!
The basic problem is, I like the stuff
I'm really pleased for you about getting control of your diabetes so well. One thing at a time
