Hi,I would really like to express my gratitude on this website when i was first diagnosed last november with type 2 diabetes.I suffer with chronic disabling anxiety & use alcohol to self medicate & didn't like the idea of taking metformin to manage my condition so i left a post detailing my concerns.I was left remarks with suggestions about a low carb diet. The information i received was invaluable.I went on a diet limiting my intake to 100 grams a day.Somedays things are difficult, other days it's a doddle.I drink a bottle or two of shiraz every night as i have learned that the liver is that busy getting rid of the toxins & alcohol it bypasses the carbs so i don't have to count the carbs in it.I know i am lucky to have such a resillient liver up to now that is.I keep on the go all day but don't exercise yet i had a blood test in september to find out what my HBA1C reading was.My doctor rang me to tell me the reading was 5.3.This is all down to this website-no one advised me anything about carbs or what to do yet the advice i received has seen me change into somebody else. Not once have i felt funny or unwell, quite the opposite,i have never felt so well.I would just like to say a massive thanks to those who advised me & also well done to this fabulous website-INVALUABLE!!!!!!

This has to be a leg pull?

If you are drinking that much you are well on the way to damaging your liver. One or two glasses a night OK, but BOTTLES????

Alchol abuse is no way to manage BGs you need to see your doctor and discuss a way to manage without the alcohol.

Drinking alcohol to excess is not the way forward in controlling diabetes I'm afraid.

Well done with the diabetes, knopfler - I'm glad the low-carb helped. It's the best way for many people.

I remember you from when you first joined, and I think we touched on the alcohol then - I too drink too much red wine, and I know it doesn't do me any good. Alcohol causes inflammation in the body, which affects internal organs including the pancreas, and can cause joint and muscle pains too. Added to the fact I was possibly never legally fit to drive - it takes so long to clear the body! And it keeps me fat :( .

I tackled my alcohol intake by stopping - a day at a time. I would tell myself - "No bottle today, but you can have one tomorrow". Now I only drink at weekends, and I try not to buy the stuff if I can. If I open a bottle I drink the lot - the only way is not to have it in. I can now go for days and weeks without touching a drop, and I know I feel much better for it. I sleep better, too. My liver is okay for now, but it won't last forever - and it's noticable that my liver function tests are better if I haven't drunk for a while beforehand.

It pushes my cholesterol up, too :(

After Christmas, I'm going to have a real try at giving up the whole way to my next HbA1c in March. That will help me get a bit more weight off, as well as helping my over-stretched finances  My aim now is to get my HbA1c under 5. Alcohol actually puts my BGs up over time - possibly because I lose a bit of control and eat more!

The basic problem is, I like the stuff

I'm really pleased for you about getting control of your diabetes so well. One thing at a time :D
