False hypos

hi, can anyone tell me if they experience the same as me. I regularly get the feelings of shaking, sweating, racing heart and when I take my BS readings it is low 5's or sometimes 4.7 or 4.8, on the odd occasions I have had readings of 3.5 and I couldn't talk properly and my eyesight started to go blurry. I'm on meteor in and have been told by my doctor and diabetic nurse that I can't experience hypos whilst on this medication, but they haven't been forthcoming in what it is. I have read up a bit on false hypos and am thinking that this maybe what I am experiencing. My trouble is I can't control myself when I experience these lows and I panic and basically shove anything I can find into my mouth to bring my levels up and in doing so end up feeling horrible due to high sugars. Just recently I have been experiencing fainting and feeling faint at various times of day and when I've checked my sugar levels sometimes they are low 5 (which I don't class as low) and sometimes they are 6 or 7. I'm starting to feel beaten by my diabetes as I feel after 5 years of being diabetic I should have got to grips with this by now. I just can't seem to get it under control. Any help would be really appreciated

Hi @Kellrob thought someone would have been along by now, but I suppose you could put this same question on your introduction.

You have not given too much information as to numbers.

When you were diagnosed you would have had a blood test and told what that is.your HbA1c usually a number like 49 or 53 even much higher like 140. you could have alternatively been given a number like 6.4 or an 7.9 or 8.7%. Do you know what that number was. Also as you say you have been diagnosed a year have you had further tests up-to-date, plus cholesterol.

Do you know what your fasting is.

When you mention 4.7 & 4.8 these are good numbers not particularly low. I understand Normal people can be as low as 3.8 but normally in the low 4s. People on here would be envious of such numbers.

For type 2 's it is unusual to have a Hypo, I am aware that drinking alcohol excessive could reduce the numbers and cause a hypo but is rare.

You do not need to panic, just having a small snack will suffice unless below the 4s and a drink of a sugary drink would soon correct it, but as a type 2 I don't believe you need to be doing this.

What you omit to say is what you are eating maybe you could give an example of a normal days food intake.

Hi Neil,
thank you for your reply. i dont have a reading of my HbA1c when i was first diagnosed, i think back then i was ignorant and didnt know i could ask for that information. What i have got though is my HbA1c results taken in 2011 which was 58 mmol and then in June 2014 it was 48 mmol and then in Dec 2014 it had gone back up to 54 mmol. My cholesterol was 2011 3.9 mmol, June 2014 4.3 mmol and Dec 2014 4 mmol.
After reading your reply about my BS numbers i think maybe i am overthinking the whole thing. It may have something to do with a book i have just read called Reverse Your Diabetes by Dr David Cavan who suggests that cutting down the carbs would help, this is what i have tried to do and as a result maybe experiencing what i feel as 'sugar lows'. This is why i think they may be false hypos. I am a person who panics by nature so ,maybe i just need to chill a bit.
I lost about 2 stone in weight just over a year ago and was exercising regularly, but when i had a couple of fainting episodes i panicked and felt i couldnt go to the gym or swimming in case i fainted! Hence, i then put on a stone and my HbA1c went up including my blood pressure.
I started swimming again this week and am plucking up the courage to return to the gym.
A typical day of food for me would be branflakes and banana for breakfast (around 9.30am), then lunch would be a jacket potato with baked beans or cheese and a salad, followed by some chopped up fruit and a yoghurt, and then in the afternoon it all goes downhill and i feel constantly hungry so i snack on fruit, ryvitas and sometimes i fail badly and have biscuits and crips. my evening meal around 6 ish would be something cooked from scratch consisting of chicken or mince with either potatos, pasta or rice, then yoghurt or for a treat ice cream. This changed when i decided to cut the carbs, so my breakfast was grilled bacon and scrambled eggs, mid morning i was hungry so would have a nectarine or orange, lunch would be bowl of home made chicken or veg soup. afternoon would be when i experienced the sugar lows and would then make myself a sandwich, then dinner would be the usual but with out any carbs. Throughout the day drinking orange juice to keep my sugars up. This lasted only about 4 days and i felt it was making me feel too horrible to carry on!!
i do take meds for high blood pressure and cholesterol and also thyroid.
i hope i havent bored you to tears with all this information, maybe i just need a swift kick up the rear, i know there are people out there who are struggling more than me but i know that what i do now is what will help with my future diabetes. My father also has diabetes and has neuropathy in both his legs and has just recently began to experience it in his fingers now. The future frightens me and i really want to get to grips with this now.

I believe it could be false hypos or what is known as carb flu.
You are experiencing a form of carb withdrawal.
This is perfectly normal.
Keep low carbing and this will pass.
Keep testing and posting.
You are suffering the symptoms of hypos but you are not low enough, as your bloods seem quite good.
I hope this helps.

Thanks Nosher8355, im going to try again and try not to be such a wimp!! trouble is even though i test and my readings are ok i still feel awful, i need loads of willpower i think lol :)

Hi @Kellrob ,

The HbA1c and Cholesterol, you are allowed to ask and get printouts of those tests including liver & Kidney function tests. Ask at your doctors they are important. Your cholesterol looks ok to me but you need the prints outs for your HDL & LDL & Trigs, these are the good & bad bits

I am pleased you have read the reversing diabetes by Dr David Cavan so have I.

It is now that when you start low carbing and in particular below 50 carbs per day you move into Ketosis, which is normal. This is the body changing from using Carbohydrates converted to glucose for energy to using Ketones to convert your fat to energy instead, this is a perfectly normal process. But when you body makes that change, sometimes there is weakness a feeling of lightheaded-ness and this can be up-to to 6 weeks from the start to the low carbing.

Now a contradiction, you can have lower carbs without going that low, anything under ( I think) 125 Carbs maybe 135, is low carbing. I think I'm about 60 to 70 carbs per day.

You have got to stop panicking, this is a slow process, but to 'speed up' this slow process you need consistency repeat consistency.

That is if you want to see some results sooner then be consistent with what you are eating. This is the real Tortoise & Hare, stick at it slowly but surely, you will get there, panicking is not helping your HbA1c, you have seen you can have low numbers, numbers that people on here would be envious of.

' branflakes and banana for breakfast' I personally would not be eating Banana and nor would a lot on here, not sure about the bran flakes but I presume your having milk that's not usually not vey good either, I would imagine that is a NO NO as well. Take a blood test before eating breakfast, eat these foods, then 1hr check if you have moved more than 2 mmol/L upwards then you need to be looking at that food, take another test at 2hrs, you should be coming down.

'jacket potato with baked beans' You need to test these, I can only manage 1/2 a Jacket I cannot manage beans. 'chopped up fruit' you need to test this also I only manage 1/2 an apple and the 'yoghurt' needs to be Full Fat. 'Ryvitas' are 6 carbs each I only have 2 for lunch. With full fat Philadelphia and Mackerel.
'potatos, pasta or rice', are really all out or in very small portions, 'ice cream' I am told is a real NO NO.

'Throughout the day drinking orange juice to keep my sugars up', the Orange will be really spiking you, fresh orange juice, a glass is equal to at least 3 oranges. Test it you will see.

Now if you want to do this properly reduce the carbs slowly, but you have to be testing. That's testing your fasting as that will give a measure on how you are progressing although it's usually the last number to drop it's a very good indicator on how you are doing.
The fasting can be combined with your first bite of breakfast then test 1 hr and then 2 hr if you have more than a 2mmol/L move or it is really high then you will have to remove the offending carbs. I don't test breakfast or lunch now as I know that it will not affect me.

Do the testing for every meal. When you see the numbers, what-ever they are don't panic, adjust you Carbs for the next meal. You need to get the HbA1c down to the low 40's or even 30's. Remember stress also will increase your Glucose levels.

A good book to get is Carbs & Calls it's just pictures of foods but it's a great quick reference guide to Carbohydrates & Calories.

Remember when you are low carbing you need to have the fat, like butter, cheese, cream, eggs, Bacon, protein like chicken with the skin, beef pork
Avocado is a great source of fat. Fish, Salmon, Tuna, Mackerel, Trout, .Sardines

Once you have got into this habit and adjusted your diet, not worrying about the lows, and you start to lose weight your blood pressure will usually drop, your blood glucose levels should start to drop.
